Position Summary 

As a Porter/Kitchen Aide, you will play a vital role in maintaining cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency in both the kitchen and facility. This unique position involves a combination of kitchen assistance and custodial duties, ensuring a clean and organized environment for both employees and visitors. 

Kitchen Aide Responsibilities:

  • Work with DFTA Nutritious to plan appetizing meals and prepare menus in advance according to applicable regulations and individual special diets. 
  • Maintain an up-to-date file of temperature logs as mandated by DFTA. 
  • Meet with the building director regularly to discuss the food service program. 
  • Maintain updated DFTA food log to be completed daily. 
  • Food Preparation: 
    • Assist in food preparation tasks such as chopping, peeling, and portioning ingredients. 
    • Follow recipes and guidelines for meal preparation. 
    • Operate kitchen equipment under supervision.
  • Dishwashing and Cleaning: 
    • Wash dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment using commercial dishwashers. 
    • Maintain kitchen cleanliness by sanitizing surfaces and ensuring a tidy workspace. 
    • Assist with kitchen organization and inventory management. 
    • Support Cook: 
    • Ensure that food is stored properly and at the correct temperature. 
    • Follow food safety and hygiene protocols.

Custodian Responsibilities

  • Cleaning and Maintenance: 
    • Perform routine cleaning duties throughout the facility, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting. 
    • Clean and sanitize restrooms, break rooms, and common areas. 
    • Empty trash bins and replace liners as needed. 
    • Report any maintenance or repair issues to the appropriate department. 
    • Oversee the daily cleanliness of shared common areas including conference rooms and kitchens;
    • Receive deliveries via the freight elevator and move deliveries to appropriate locations within the building;
    • Coordinate with receptionist to log packages, and advise the appropriate recipient;
    • Set-up conference rooms in requested special configurations for meetings and events; 
  • Safety and Security: 
    • Monitor and report any safety hazards, such as spills or damaged equipment. 
    • Ensure that fire exits are clear and accessible. 
    • Lock and unlock doors as per the schedule. 
    • Collaborate with security personnel when necessary. 
    • Oversee the efficient, safe, orderly use of the public bathroom facilities during peak hours;
    • Inform the public of responsible use of High Line property, including proper disposal of waste & recycling items, chewing gum, etc.;
    • Participate in snow and ice removal; 
  • Inventory Management: 
    • Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and consumables throughout the building according to department standards; and notify the supervisor when reordering is needed. 
    • Keep track of custodial equipment and report any damage or loss.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Previous experience in a kitchen or custodial role is preferred but not required. 
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team. 
  • Physical stamina and strength to perform cleaning and kitchen tasks. 
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to cleanliness and organization. 
  • Flexibility to work weekends or evenings as needed.
