Our Molecular and Translational Oncology (METRO) Program brings together investigators to leverage mechanistic studies at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center to harness therapies for patients in our catchment area.
Job Overview
The role of Assistant Scientist is essential to the generation of data and running of the lab, which affects the productivity of federally funded research projects in the Lab and the ability to acquire further external funding for the lab and GUMC as a whole. They are involved in a number of projects and are integral to the everyday efficiency of the lab in completing a host of tasks and responsibilities
The Assistant Science functions independently in managing daily affairs of the research laboratory and perform routine and complex laboratory research experiments, receiving instruction and mentorship from the Principal Investigator, Dr. Robbins.
They conduct essential research and train junior lab members in routine protocols and assist in all organizational aspects of the laboratory per Georgetown University policies and procedures; and also help run the experimental requirements of an 8-10 person research laboratory.
The Assistant Scientist performs a diverse array of molecular biology, biochemical and mouse genetics experimental research; and provides some of the lab management required to keep a 8-10 person research laboratory running efficiently.
They use discretion and judgment in research activities with project scope and methodologies; and apply to their duties in-depth knowledge of molecular biology, protocol/ method development, organizing and implementing complex research plans, analysis of data, and writing manuscripts for publication of findings.
The Assistant Scientist works directly with the PI open a lab at GU medical school and then transition to efficiently running that biomedical research lab.
Work Interactions
The Assistant Scientist supports the PI in conducting research and may assist the lab manager in organizing purchase of reagents and supplies. They also assist in training junior lab members in routine protocols, as well as with all organizational aspects of the laboratory per Georgetown University policies and procedures.
Qualifications
PhD in Biochemistry or Biotechnology
Postdoctoral experience as part of a research team focused on the role of Wnt or SHH signaling in cancer - 3 years preferred
Experience in basic molecular biology, mammalian cell culture - 3 years preferred
Some experience with mouse husbandry and genetics
Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills
Ability to work as part of a team and acquire new skills when needed
Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
