Overview

The Accounting Manager is a direct report and key advisor to the Director of Finance. The Accounting manager is responsible for overseeing general ledger preparation, financial statements, income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, year-end independent financial audits, and grantee risk identification and mitigation strategies using sound accounting principles, practices, and procedures. This Accounting Manager also manages two staff accountants. 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Manage Internal Controls
    • Oversees and manages the collection, consolidation, and evaluation of financial transactional data, 
    • Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine transactions.
    • Establishes and enforces proper accounting methods and principles and ensures all financial reporting deadlines are met. 
    • Monitors and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
    • Maintains accounting controls by establishing a chart of accounts and by defining accounting policies and procedures.
    • Analyzes team workflow to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources and continuously seeks opportunities for process improvement and efficiency enhancements.
    • Improves systems and processes while taking the lead in implementing corrective measures.
    • Maintains financial security by establishing internal controls.
    • Ensures alignment with long-term financial forecasts, financial accounting, and organizational objectives.
    • Establishes and maintains financial files and records to document transactions.
    • Supports the Director of Finance with special projects and workflow process improvements.
  2. Oversee year-end Annual Comprehensive Financial Report
    • Works with the Director of Finance to coordinate with external auditors to ensure clean and timely year-end audits and to conduct special projects and audit requests.
    • Leads and conducts an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year-end financial close processes, such as: accounts payable/receivable, cash receipts, general ledger, payroll and utilities, treasury, budgeting, cash forecasting, revenue and expenditure variance analysis, capital assets reconciliations, trust account statement reconciliations, check runs, and fixed asset activity.
    • Prepares and presents comprehensive financial reports to Board of Commissioners.
    • Supports budget and forecasting activities.
  3. Risk Identification and Mitigation
    • Establishes the financial status of the organization by developing and implementing systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying, and reporting financial information.
    • Complies with and enforces accounting regulations by understanding current and proposed legislation and by recommending and implementing new procedures.
  4. General Ledger Management
    • Oversees daily operations of the accounting team. 
    • Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the general ledger structure.
    • Tracks cash forecasting.
  5. Financial Statement Reporting
    • Oversees and manages the consolidation and evaluation of financial data to prepare the required financial statements and any special reports identified by management.
  6. Pre-Award Financial Due Diligence
    • Oversees and participates in financial review process of applicants, contractors, or vendors during the procurement process prior to award.

  1. Leadership and Collaboration 
  • As a manager provides thought-partnership and support to the Director of Finance.
  • Provides leadership to direct reports, fostering a culture of team building, collaboration, innovation, rigor, and action. 
  • Coaches and mentors direct reports toward results that focus on impact to family outcomes and advance the strategic plan.
  • Assists in the development of the department annual budget and monitors expenditures against budget to remain a fiscally responsible organization and maximize the use of financial resources to support organizational goals.
  • Models and leads strong collaboration efforts across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in finance, economics, accounting, public administration or a related field is preferred. A master’s degree is a plus. 
  • Experience: Minimum of five years of accounting work or related experience in finance analysis and planning, consulting or strategic planning within a public company, grant making organization, university or similar industry preferred. Experience in conducting financial audits and ensuring compliance with regulations. Ability to forecast financial performance based on historical data and market trends. Minimum of three years of staff supervision preferred. Advanced Excel Skills (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, SUMIF, Text to Columns, Charts, etc.). Experience in Financial Edge or other industry leading financial systems.
  • Collaboration and Relationship Building: Proven track record of collaboration with internal and external partners. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across various departments and levels of the organization. 
  • Leadership: High degree of integrity with proven ability to lead, inspire, mentor, and manage teams within a collaborative environment. Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to build and nurture relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Strategic Thinking: Proven track record of strategic thinking, analyzing complex issues, and developing and implementing innovative solutions. 
  • Advocacy and Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated experience in advocacy, public speaking, and effectively communicating complex issues to diverse audiences. Exceptional presentation skills with the ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders, including Board of Commissioners.
  • Commitment to Mission: Demonstrated experience with public family serving systems, understanding early childhood development, coupled with experience advancing equity and improving outcomes for children and families.
  • Analytical Skills: Demonstrated experience using and leveraging data and research to drive decision-making and advance organizational goals and equitable outcomes.
