About Economic Mobility Pathways (EMPath)

EMPath is a Boston-based nonprofit that dramatically improves the lives of people living in poverty. Our mission is to transform people's lives by helping them move out of poverty and provide other institutions with the tools to systematically do the same. We do so by providing direct services in the Greater Boston area, including supporting life-changing economic mobility coaching model, called Mobility Mentoring ® ; convening a global learning network of organizations and agencies; and conducting research and advocacy for what we know works in disrupting poverty.

Position Title: Career Mobility Mentor

Hours: Full Time, Hybrid work opportunity. Please note: EMPath transitioned to 36-hour, 4-day work week. This position requires 2 days in-office (EMPath's offices are across Boston-metro) and 2 days remote. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Salary: $52,000-$55,000 annually

Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.

Program Overview and Mission:

AMP Up Boston is not just a program; it's a transformative journey! Over three exhilarating years, we're empowering more than 250 determined residents from the Boston Housing Authority and Cambridge Housing Authority to pursue their dreams in education, careers, and financial stability. The program combines participant-driven supportive services, peer learning, and cash incentives to help families achieve success. Here's another thrilling part—AMP Up Boston is more than personal transformation; it's groundbreaking research with Harvard and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Together, we're embarking on a quest to truly understand how our mentorship approach empowers participants to achieve economic self-sufficiency.

The Opportunity:

As a valued member of our team, you'll become part of a dedicated group of professionals who are deeply committed to helping individuals achieve their aspirations. In this role you will get the chance to partner with participants and provide them with coaching that will set them up for career success by creating goals in all areas of their life. Your contributions will extend beyond individual guidance as you play a pivotal role in bolstering the career support capabilities of our AMP Up team. Your day to day incorporates

  • Transforming Lives: Mentor a caseload of at least 20 participants across five critical areas, including family & housing, health & wellness, finances, education, and career, empowering them to achieve their dreams and improve their overall well-being.
  • Empowering your Team Members: Support team members by providing guidance in navigating career-related questions through personalized one-on-one consultations.
  • Changing Trajectories: Deliver career coaching services to low-income adults. This includes helping to craft resumes and cover letters, conducting job readiness training, and guiding comprehensive career exploration.
  • Inspiring Growth: Develop and facilitate dynamic career workshops for both team members and participants, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for career success.
  • Forging Connections: Build lasting relationships with job readiness/placement agencies and employers throughout the greater Boston area. Your efforts will expand EMPath's capacity to make valuable referrals, driving participants towards career advancement.
  • Staying at the Forefront: Keep pace with the latest best practices in career counseling, workforce training and economic mobility coaching through continuous research and professional development.
  • Tracking Progress: Conduct detailed assessments, closely monitor participant progress, and meticulously document their advancement according to individualized plans.
  • Driving Insights: Regularly enter and track data to contribute to internal and external research, shaping the future of career counseling and upward economic mobility.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Two to four years of direct career counseling and/or coaching experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree is a minimum requirement. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Cultural competency and a demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey guidance and support.
  • Capacity to manage a caseload of up to 20 participants efficiently, ensuring personalized attention.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to thrive in a dynamic program environment.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including data entry and familiarity with relevant software tools.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of workforce development, public health, social service, advocacy, and educational organizations and resources.
  • Proven experience in coaching economic mobility among individuals with low-income.
  • Connections to community resources and institutions within the area of expertise are a significant advantage.
  • Bilingual skills are preferred but not required, as they can enhance the ability to serve diverse populations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires walking, sitting, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Work may be stressful at times. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and participants. Ability to travel around Boston in personal car or public transit. Work is performed in an office environment.
