Position Title: Economic Mobility Coach/Mentor

Supervisor: Director of Economic Mobility Services – Newton Thrive

Salary: $50,000- $52,000 USD Annually

Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.

Hours: Four-day work week, with 36 hours per week (4 9-hour week days); occasional evenings and weekends as necessary. This position requires 2 days in office (at Seaport location &/or Newton City Hall) and allows 2 days remote.

Overview and Responsibilities:

Newton Thrive is an exciting new initiative pairing Mobility Mentoring®—an internationally recognized economic coaching approach—with monthly guaranteed income. It is designed as a two-year program to support 50 low-income Newton, MA residents in reaching their goals in education, career advancement, savings, and economic well-being. The program combines participant-driven supportive services, peer learning, and cash incentives to support families in achieving their goals. In partnership with the UMass Donahue Institute, we will evaluate program implementation and participant outcomes.

We are looking for an experienced human service provider to join our dynamic organization to provide economic mobility coaching to participants. A successful Mobility Mentor will be responsible for:

  • Providing one-to-one Mobility Mentoring coaching to participants on goals related to upward economic mobility, including housing, budgeting, career and education, child care, health care, and more
  • Conducting detailed assessments, and monitoring and documenting participants’ progress according to individual plans
  • Entering and tracking data on a regular basis for internal and external research
  • Providing support with program recruiting and marketing
  • Participating in the development and facilitation of participant workshops and community groups
  • Fostering the development of community in a constantly changing environment

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree preferred
    • Experience or training in human services coaching; Must be able to manage a participant case load of 20-25 individuals effectively and efficiently.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Cultural competency and sensitivity with groups and individuals representing a variety of needs, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds
    • Kindness, compassion, curiosity, enthusiasm, and sense of humor
    • Ability to respond flexibly to a fluid and evolving program environment
    • Ability to work collaboratively with partners, colleagues, and participants
    • Strong time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail
    • Strong computer skills, including data entry
    • Basic knowledge of principles of community organizing, service coordination, and advocacy to initiate/coordinate service delivery and follow-up services
    • Basic knowledge of workforce development, economic literacy, education, and career exploration
    • Connections to community resources and institutions within area(s) of expertise is a plus

    Working Conditions:

    Position includes walking, sitting, some bending and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Standard safety protocols (e.g., masks) are informed by public health guidance and subject to change. Work may be stressful at times. Requires travel to Newton, as needed.
