Patient Access Services Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Supervisor oversees patient and visitor interactions in the Main Lobby and Emergency Department to ensure timely and coordinated care and effective communication among all staff who are involved in patient treatment / admission. Provides compassionate assistance to patients and visitors presenting to the Hospital by proactively greeting new arrivals and providing appropriate guidance. Implement interventions and coordinate needs to prevent patient diversions. The Supervisor supervises staff assigned to the Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Regularly assesses patient waiting area volume and initiates efforts to eliminate unnecessary delays. Coordinates efforts across Hospital departments / disciplines to identify impediments to patient flow and treatment in a timely manner.
  • Assist Security with patient and visitor check-in during high volume times.
  • Serves as a liaison between individuals in the waiting area and treatment areas by facilitating communication among patients, family members and clinical staff.
  • Provides appropriate non-medical information to patients and families as indicated by the primary nurse responsible for the care of the patient.
  • Provides reassurance to patients and visitors in the waiting area by informing them of what they can expect during their intake process. Provides support and compassion to family/friends as directed by the clinical staff in the event of a critical situation.
  • Assists Patient Access Services Supervisor and Manager to collaborate with clinical leadership and other departments on guidelines affecting any aspect of Patient Access Services and the site.
  • Informs staff of appropriate information obtained from a patient or family.
  • Prepares unique and recurring reports as needed and assigned.
  • Responsible for special projects as needed and assigned while keeping Patient Access Services leadership properly informed.
  • Develops and maintains positive customer relationships with all patients, colleagues, visitors, vendors, etc.
  • Adheres to all company and department policies and procedures in confidentiality, regulatory or contractual mandates, and HR policy.
  • Performs other department-specific duties as deemed appropriate by Patient Access Services Supervisor and Manager.

REQUIREMENTS EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's Degree in Health Science or Business required.
  • Minimum of two years' knowledge in Healthcare, Revenue Cycle, and/or Business Office required.
  • Minimum of one years' experience in staff supervision and leadership required.
  • EMS / Emergency Management experience is strongly preferred.
  • NYS EMT License desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and multitasking skills.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in highly stressful situations.
  • Innovative and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Bilingual skills desirable.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Excellent auditory and visual acuity.
  • Ability to transfer patients in and out of wheelchairs and able to push wheelchairs.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Work 12.5 or 8 hour shifts.

  • This function/position maybe designated as “essential.” This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook University Hospital and related facilities.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

  • The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as - $65,000 - $90,000 based on relevant experience.
