POSITION SUMMARY:

At Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, a Trauma Program Data Registrar is a valuable member of our team, who will be responsible for data capture related to the American College of Surgery (ACS) National Trauma Database (NTDB) registry, the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) registry, and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Trauma data registry. The primary focus of these registries is to improve outcomes for patients undergoing trauma care at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital as well as to meet requirements to remain an NYS-designated trauma center. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

DUTIES OF A TRAUMA PROGRAM DATA REGISTRAR MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Performs data abstraction, collection, and coding of clinical and follow-up data from all sources into the trauma registry database (Trauma One).
  • Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other members of the trauma team and trauma patients to perform trauma registry functions.
  • Keeps registry current as defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as 80% complete within 60 days of patient discharge.
  • Determines appropriateness of patient entry into the Trauma Registry based on guidelines in the American College of Surgeons "Resources for the Optimal Care of the Injured Patient" as well as the National Trauma Data Standard.
  • Provides high-quality data entry by abstraction of required state and national trauma data elements from the patient chart in real-time and retrospectively.
  • Participates in quality assurance, data validation, and improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection and timely submission of data according to State Trauma Registry and the American College of Surgeons Optimal Resource Document for Trauma Centers.
  • Resolves routine coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from Trauma Program leadership and/or Trauma Registry vendor when appropriate.
  • Recognizes patterns of mechanism and injury during case abstraction in order to contribute to opportunities for injury prevention and community safety.
  • Reports data in formats such as Excel and/or PowerPoint for both internal and external consumption (includes statistical, clinical, and research data).
  • This position is remote.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:

  • Ability to abstract, analyze, and interpret information in a medical record.
  • Project management skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with diverse populations of healthcare workers is critical.
  • Basic computer skills including spreadsheet and word processing are also required.
  • Demonstrated ability to grow and adapt in a changing environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • CAISS certification
  • Experience in Cerner Soarian, Trauma One and T-Systems
  • Clinical chart review and abstraction experience and ability.
  • Intermediate experience with Excel.
  • Experience interpreting and complying with requirements of regulatory and/or accrediting agencies.
  • Skill in presenting information to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience in collaborative design of electronic health record components.
  • Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of these qualifications.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton's Employee Health Services*
  • Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

  • The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
