Summary

East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.

 

 

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities. As the number-two executive to the CFO, the Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the Board of Managers and Audit Committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team.

The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $30 million and supervise a team of 2 staff members including functional responsibility over general accounting, accounts payable and accounts receivable. The Controller will ensure that ESH has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.

In addition, she or he will partner with the CFO, senior leadership, and the human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate all external and internal/program audit activity.
  • Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of ESH’s financial status.
  • Assist ESH leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Support the CFO in engaging the board’s audit committee around issues and trends in accounting standards.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Monitors the collection of government contract receivables
  • Work with Grant Accounting on following tasks:
    • Prepares monthly and quarterly financial reports to governmental agencies for expense reimbursement
    • Preparation for periodic audits performed by governmental agencies and organization’s annual audit.
    • Participates in status meetings with program managers to strategize on contract compliance issues
    • Prepares budget modifications, coordinating with finance and program staff as necessary
    • Works closely with Program Staff analyzing accounting treatment of funds and contract
    • Complete Year-end contract close-outs
    • Liaises with funders as necessary
  • Prepares adjusting, month-end and year-end closing journal entries.
  • Completes projects assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

Expected Work Schedule

This position is a full-time position expected to work thirty-five (35) hours a week. Generally, the work schedule for this position is 9:00am-5:00pm, Monday - Friday. Workday/hours subject to change.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Qualifications


Required Education/Skills/Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting; CPA and/or MBA preferred

• Experience with Abila MIP or similar accounting software highly desirable

• Proven ability to handle multiple tasks and competing deadlines

• Strong administrative, and organizational

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to produce accurate and timely work products when working under pressure

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate discretion with information
