Summary
East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Principal, the Director of Student Support Services (DSSS) is a member of the school leadership team. The DSSS will work to foster a positive, non-punitive school culture where students and families feel connected, empowered, and safe. The DSSS is responsible for ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the disciplinary process including interventions and support services.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Administrative/Discipline/Intervention
  • Serve as a thought partner to the principal, collaborating with school leadership in aligning school culture and creating and managing a safe and welcoming learning environment.
  • Assist school administration the annual school and event calendars and student and staff handbooks.
  • Oversee the student disciplinary process and student behavior management systems.
  • Design evaluate and implement systematic approach to managing and intervening on student discipline issues based on the Student Handbook and Restorative Practice models in classrooms and school levels.
  • Identify high need students and coordinate with student advisors and teachers to target interventions; track and monitor impact of interventions.
  • Ensure the timely reporting of student infractions and consequences to families, administration, and other reporting systems/agencies in accordance with all applicable state laws and reporting.
Support Services/Coordination
  • Design and implement the instructional vision for HCHS, ensuring the successful implementation of developmentally appropriate, rigorous curricula and instructional materials.
  • Supervise and work closely with entire social support team, including ESH staff upon occasion, to get necessary support services for students and families in need.
  • Supervise the Advisors and implementation of the Primary Person Model, ensuring data tracking and case notes completion.
  • Develop school wide activities and initiatives that celebrate student milestones and successes and encourage community building across school stakeholders - staff, students, families, and partners.
  • Develop strong relationships with teachers, parents, and students.
Research & Development
  • Track, analyze and report behavioral data to guide and monitor the social-emotional development of students and interventions through the Response to Intervention process.
  • Identify the needs and concerns of parents and community members and see they are addressed in a timely manner. (i.e. surveys, collection of data).
  • Train and lead the "Kid Talk" process, providing structure around continual data analysis and evaluation of how the school culture and discipline processes are working and how students are doing.
  • Use discipline data to inform school-wide social, emotional, and academic practices and professional development.
Community Engagement
  • Work with school staff to develop, implement, and evaluate parent and community engagement and community outreach activities.
  • Serve as resource to parents and community members as it pertains to meeting the school's educational goals and assist in the coordination of parent and community engagement activities and services with other agencies and organizations.
Professional Development
  • Collaborate with colleagues (leadership and school-wide meetings, professional development days, the professional development institute) to continuously improve personal practice, instruction, assessment, and student achievement, as well as the overall goals and mission of the school.
  • Plan, lead, or identify coaching and professional development on classroom/school culture and Restorative Practices

Expected Work Environment and Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Workdays/hours subject to change based on HCHS needs.
Remote Work
ESH has determined that up to zero (0%) of this position can be remote due to COVID-19. Subject to change as public health conditions evolve.
Travel
Site visits to various programs in Bronx and Manhattan.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Qualifications
Required Education/Skills/Experience
  • Understanding of Haven Charter High School mission and school achievement goals.
  • Master's Degree required; or 5 years' experience in School Leadership or School Building Leader Certification.
  • Significant experience in leadership roles at a school or similar education environment, with specific experience managing adults.
  • A passion for and record of driving student achievement and overall success in diverse and traditionally under-resourced communities, preferably at the high school level.
  • A deep belief that all students can thrive in a challenging, high-quality, nurturing, and supportive learning environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with families and community members.
  • Strong belief in collaboration, including the sharing and spreading of best practices.
  • Ability to collaborate with other school stakeholders.
  • Ability to think outside the box and problem solve innovatively; and
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
Required Clearances
  • COVID Vaccine- As a recipient of Federal, State, and local funds, all staff are expected to be fully vaccinated or able to obtain vaccination before their start date.
  • Fingerprinted prior to employment by the New York City Department of Health and/or by the New York City Department of Education.
