General Description of the Job Class

The Senior Manager of Compliance Reporting and Analysis demonstrates knowledge and proven application of knowledge in extracting and presenting data relevant to Compliance and Privacy auditors and Compliance Office management. The Senior Manager of Compliance Reporting and Analysis is expected to be able to locate and retrieve a wide range of data used by all Epic modules in the Clarity and Caboodle databases, as well as in other databases as identified. In addition, the manager will supervise additional staff member(s), assigning and monitoring team projects and reporting to management. Additional duties include support of any third party tools used by the Compliance Office, and functioning as a first line of support for all software and hardware issues for the Compliance Office staff.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

The duties and responsibilities for the Senior Manager of Compliance Reporting and Analysis and team are to support the Compliance Office directors, auditors, and the Vice President of Compliance and Privacy with data needs, meet with other departments to explore available data sources, software and hardware support, and as a liaison with application vendors. This will come in the form of data extracts for audits, claims overpayments, monitoring reports, responses to OIG, CMS, and other governmental external audits, and internal investigations, analysis, and research.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervision and leadership of team including assigning and monitoring projects, training and guidance of subordinates, conducting performance reviews, implementing performance improvement plans if necessary.
  • Hiring of team members as vacancies occur.
  • Coaching and mentoring subordinates including recommending and approving training.
  • Participate in the annual creation of department work plan and monitoring completion of team’s items.
  • Participate in the development of quarterly and annual board reports.
  • Conducting meetings to keep management apprised of project status and to understand priorities.
  • Functions as a technical leader and as a subject matter expert with proficiency in Compliance and Privacy issues as they relate to the data required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and proven application of knowledge of query tools including Epic reports, Oracle, and SQL Server in extracting health care data from an electronic medical record (EMR) and other data sources.
  • Applies Compliance and Privacy subject matter knowledge to determine appropriate data sources, extraction methods, and presentation methods; requires capacity to understand specific needs or requirements to apply skills/knowledge.
  • Requires the ability to research all Epic modules and external repositories in order to determine best source of data.
  • Identifies and gains knowledge from subject matter experts internal and external to the Compliance Office.
  • Maintains a level of exposure to external industry and market technical intelligence.
  • Performs and coordinates simple to very complex projects.
  • Optimizes internal resources to maximize team capabilities.
  • Leads subordinates to resolve complex issues consistent with divisional/organizational goals, sharing knowledge gained regarding data sources and presentation methods.
  • Serves as technical resource for Compliance in cross-functional teams.
  • Effectively communicates specific data issues and solutions to Compliance Office staff.
  • Supports third party applications used in the Compliance Office.
  • Is a technical leader in data extraction, reporting, presentation methods such as dashboards.
  • Trains subordinates in the Compliance Office regarding sources of data and presentation methods.
  • Assists Compliance auditors in interpreting data and focusing requests for data.
  • Responsible for supporting management in day-to-day personnel oversight, workflow management activities, staff on-boarding and off-boarding, and vendor interaction. May be required to verify or corroborate other team members’ results and conduct training when errors are found.
  • May be called upon to become or direct team members to become an application expert for third party applications used in the Compliance Office.
  • Will function or direct team members to function as a project leader for Compliance initiatives.
  • Responsible for communicating project status to Compliance management.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training

A bachelor's degree is required either in a related field or in an unrelated field with six years of equivalent technical experience.

Licensure & Certification

Epic certification is preferred in Caboodle and Clarity. Revenue data model certification is required within 3 months of hire.

Experience

Six years of related experience is required, including extensive query tool experience. A minimum of two years of Epic reporting or database experience is required. Tableau experience preferred. Prior supervisory or technical staff leadership experience is preferred.

Skills

  • Skills Possesses expert level knowledge and proven application of data extraction and presentation methods, including Oracle, SQL Server, and Tableau. Attention to detail and accuracy of results is crucial.
  • Demonstrates very strong technical and analytic skills. Must be able to present conclusions to non-technical audience in a way that is useful to them in drawing conclusions.
  • Keeps current on industry and market intelligence; communicates and applies appropriate new technologies and best practices. Keeps up to date with Epic releases and shares knowledge with team. Maintains Epic training and certifications. 
  • Possesses strong leadership skills. Is team-oriented with the ability to take initiative and ownership of projects or delegate when necessary. Identifies key issues, analyzes cause and effect relationships, and seeks ideas and suggestions from those who can contribute and are affected.
  • Demonstrated relationship management skills with both end users and technical team members, including the ability to supervise and train team members with lower level skills.
  • Ability to independently research and identify sources of data, whether in Epic or other data repositories. Identify and make use of resources within the Duke IT community and external to Duke.
  • Demonstrated project management skills for both internal Compliance Office projects and those including other departments. Must be adept at communicating with various audiences, from Compliance auditors to directors and VPs, as well as with a technical team. Must be able to manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
  • Possess ability to extract requirements from Compliance staff and act upon them or communicate and direct others to complete. Must be able to help Compliance auditors refine their requests for data as necessary.
  • Must possess the ability to research, recommend, and learn new software applications useful to the Compliance Office, and direct the implementation of any new applications.
