Director of Finance

Mission For This Role:

The Director of Finance will lead all functions of the internal accounting team and will report directly to the CEO in order to execute the company’s financial strategy.

As a company, we seek to provide the highest possible standard in property management, and this role is critical to supporting our mission. The accounting team is responsible for maintaining accurate bank records and processing property income, as well as handling all ad hoc requests from other departments and leaders. The Director of Finance will manage a team of accountants, both local and remote, will monitor and process spending at all managed properties, and will be expected to implement process efficiencies to enable the highest quality work to be produced as efficiently as possible. The Director of Finance should have a deep understanding of the principles of accounting, property cash flow, be confident creating and presenting financial reports, and possess strong collaborative and interpersonal skills to manage a team. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a strong desire to drive positive and lasting impact at a successful and growing company.

Objectives For the Role:

  • Within the first month:
  • The Director of Finance will be exposed to all aspects of our business, and trained accordingly by the Executive Committee (composed of all Department leads)
  • The Director of Finance will be trained on Appfolio, the property management accounting software our company utilizes.
  • Additional opportunities to apply property transactions will coincide with this training to allow real life applications to the online lessons.
  • The Director of Finance will be exposed to the monthly cash flow cycle for properties
  • Within the first 3 months the Director of Finance
  • The Director of Finance will oversee and auditing the accounting calendar of deliverables and manage all accounting procedures successfully.
  • The Director of Finance will build relationships with all direct reports and develop an in-depth understanding of all staff responsibilities.
  • Within the first 6 months the Director of Finance
  • The Director of Finance will set vision and direction for any necessary process improvements to drive greater efficiency in the department
  • The Director of Finance will develop plans for growth to increase company profit while also reducing expenditures
  • The Director of Finance will assist the CEO and CFO to develop financial plans
  • Within a year and ongoing
  • The Director of Finance will hire and oversee the team, including giving directives and timely feedback
  • The Director of Finance will engage in bi-annual performance reviews

Important Personal Competencies

  • Analytical Skills: The Director of Finance should be comfortable taking in data from diverse departments to easily identify problems, communicate with management and then find and implement solutions.
  • Risk Assessment Skills: Risk assessment skills: Companies need a Director of Finance that identifies risk easily and finds ways to mitigate it before it reaches crisis levels. When crises are unavoidable, they work with various departments to contain and control them.
  • Set Vision and Direction: We expect the Director of Finance to lead the internal accounting team as well as impact the broader company through thoughtful analysis and dedicated follow through on all deliverables and priorities.
  • Self-starter/Takes Initiative: We are looking for a person with the ability to flex skills, knowledge, and judgment to effectively problem solve and navigate a wide variety of performance related questions, situations, challenges, and opportunities. The role will require ad hoc requests to provide critical information for management or clients. The ability to multitask when requested but still complete all assignments as assigned and outlined on the department schedule will keep the department running smoothly.
  • Organization/Follow Through: The role includes activity that is cyclical and requires that the individual maintain a standard of completing monthly tasks and maintaining accurate records of activity as required by Accounting and other Departments. This will allow the individual to be successful in providing financial analysis to department contributors who require this information for excellent customer service to Clients.
  • People / Team Builder: Helping both the individuals in the department and your team as a whole being the best they can be is crucial to the success of the team and company at large. It will be expected that the Director of Finance can hold direct reports accountable for performance, motivate staff to improve and be responsible for the operation of the department. The role will also include communicating and working with other departments to address any issues that arise.

Qualification and Skills:

  • Must Haves:
  • Sharp accounting skills, with a good understanding of financial statements and confidence in creating them.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically excel. Knowledge of additional software: WorkDocs, Google Suite, etc.
  • Track record of success in previous finance and/or accounting roles
  • Nice to Haves:
  • Experience in property management accounting/property management software (Appfolio).
  • Business degree or advanced degree

Other Role Details:

  • Full time position, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm
  • Pay range expected between $120-160K annually based on experience
