Job Summary

The Job

Required evening hours are 4 : 00 PM - 9 : 00 PM Monday Thursday and 3 : 00 PM 7 : 00 PM on Friday. The remaining hours will vary each week.

Occasional weekend and overnight work will be required.

The position provides support to three Department of Community Services youth programs : Teen Talk, Clark County Youth Commission, and Teens for Tomorrow Peer Educators.

This position must understand the importance of confidentiality / privacy of youth and be able to maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with youth, their families, and the community.

DCS is looking for someone who works with excitement and enthusiasm in a creative environment. The program assistant will assist in greeting youth and other guests of the Clark County Youth House.

The job duties will include supporting outreach efforts, volunteer recruitment and engagement, and assisting with research, report preparation, and other visual presentation work.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Prefer a bachelor’s degree in social services or equivalent field; and minimum one year of experience working with youth in a supportive role.

The degree must have been conferred by an institution of higher education and have National Recognition of Accrediting Agencies by the U.

S. Secretary of Education, and official transcripts will be required at the time of hire.

All combinations of education, experience, and training that demonstrate the ability to perform the work will be considered.

Finalist for the position must submit to a criminal background check, as required by RCW 43.43.830.

The ideal candidate will have the following strengths :

  • Strong communication skills including presentation and group leading, interpersonal skills, small group communication and active listening
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to develop a supportive relationship with teen volunteers
  • Knowledge of positive youth development and prevention research and strategies
  • Actively work to implement diversity and inclusion using a racial equity lens
  • A valid, unencumbered Washington or Oregon State driver’s license is required.
  • Knowledge of : problem solving skills; community resources; issues faced by youth; positive youth development; racial equity, familiarity with engaging youth voice in decision making;
  • how to use social media to communicate with youth and perform outreach; effective design and structure of youth workshops and activities;

experience using Microsoft Publisher, Weebly, Word and Excel.

  • Ability to : communicate with youth in a manner that is compassionate, strength-based and authentic; celebrate diversity and different styles, experiences, and abilities among youth and colleagues;
  • maintain confidentiality, evaluate risk and manage crisis situations when necessary; build relationships with individuals in need of support;
  • communicate and express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; be responsive in a work environment that may involve a high level of stress;

demonstrate strong customer service orientation

Examples of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following :

Teen Talk (30 hours a week) :

The position provides support to youth who volunteer for the Clark County Teen Talk line. The position will implement prevention and intervention service, mentor, train and supervise one to five youth at a time while they support their peers on the Teen Talk warm-line who provide nonjudgmental and confidential support, options, and community resources.

Primary duties include assisting the Teen Talk Program Coordinator with training sessions for youth volunteers; engaging youth in prevention support and early intervention services;

maintaining documentation of Teen Talk activities; and assisting with community presentations.

Teens for Tomorrow Peer Educators and Clark County Youth Commission (10 hours) :

This position will assist Teens for Tomorrow Peer Educators and the Clark County Youth Commission with planning and implementation of youth-led projects, maintain documentation of activities and assist with curriculum development and curriculum facilitation.
