City of Naples is Hiring an Instrument Technician Near , FL

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
The purpose of the position is to perform highly skilled technical and mechanical work involving installation, maintenance, repair and calibration of electrical, mechanical, electro-mechanical and electronic equipment of City utilities systems. Employees in this classification provide training, instruction and direction to other maintenance/mechanical personnel and service workers when applicable to the assigned work order. Work involves inspection and evaluation of equipment and machinery for proper operating conditions and maintenance and repair needs. Areas of responsibility include, but are not necessarily limited to, lift stations, water wells, and treatment plants. Position ensures the efficient and safe mechanical operation of machinery and equipment. Incumbents perform work in a manner to ensure cost efficiency and effective methods and procedures. Performs other work as requested.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATEMENT
Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees may be subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, and manual control systems; calibrates flow meters, chlorine analyzers, lime slakers, or other electrical control systems; determines problems, errors, or repairs needed; repairs or replaces systems as needed.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs radio and communications telemetry equipment, monitor control equipment, and control panel equipment for lift stations, water well sites, and treatment plants.
  • Calibrates, tests, maintains, and repairs confined entry gas detection equipment and devices; ensures equipment complies with regulatory standards; replaces sensors, batteries, filters, air liners, etc.; maintain related logs and documentation.
  • Performs layout and documentation of new installations of lift stations, water wells, and equipment at treatment plants; constructs new control panels; verifies and amends schematics; utilizes various computer programs to update schematics; maintains related logs and records.
  • Assists mechanical personnel, as needed, in lift station, water well, and treatment plant maintenance and repair; provides guidance, assistance, troubleshooting and training regarding electrical components, control valves, etc.
  • Utilizes computerized diagnostic techniques, instruments, and equipment in troubleshooting and identifying radio telemetry and other electronic problems.
  • Performs related duties; receives and interprets daily work orders, prioritizes and prepares for assigned tasks; inspects and tests tools, vehicles and safety gear; reviews and restocks supplies and service vehicle inventory; inspects equipment and systems; maintains related documentation and records.
  • Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.
  2. Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  3. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuild equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications. Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of the same equipment, machinery, and/or objects.
  4. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and/or design data and information.
  5. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
  6. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  7. Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED with vocational or technical training in electrical engineering
  • Supplemented by two (2) years of experience in electronics; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Possession of a class "B" Commercial Driver's License with tanker and air brakes endorsements may be required, and possession and maintenance of a driving record which meets or exceeds minimum City driving standards.
  • Possession of the following licenses and certifications: Water Distribution System Operator, Wastewater Collections may be required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The City of Naples is a Tobacco-Free Workplace. :Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, water hazards, disease, or pathogenic substances.
