Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to) the following:
  • Instrument persons operate instruments and data collections systems (total stations, levels, and other measuring devices) to acquire data for various types of surveys. They also assist or perform processing of field measurements and related data, limited equipment maintenance and maintain supplies for crew vehicles.
  • The instrument person must know and be able to execute the duties of the rod person and should be capable to substitute for and perform the duties of the crew chief when absent.
  • A rod person has multiple responsibilities on a survey crew. Their first responsibility is to make sure that the truck is loaded with the necessary equipment and supplies that are needed throughout the day. When at the site, a rod person will take on transporting and setting up the instruments and equipment and preparing the job site for survey. They generally are responsible for most of the clearing of brush and trees away from the survey line. As the work begins, it is the responsibility of the rod person to hold the prism pole steady for the surveyor to help determine elevations of different points. The rod person also measures how far different points are from each other, using a tape or electronic equipment, and helps with the various pieces of survey equipment. A rod person may need to be familiar with various pieces of survey equipment. If a supervisor is present at the job site, the rod person can operate the surveying equipment with the supervisor's oversight.

Requirements:

  • High School and/or specialized training from a vocational or technical school.
  • Valid driver's license with approved/acceptable driving history required.
  • Ability to travel (if needed)
  • Ability to carry and lift equipment as needed on the project.
  • Ability to cut and/or clear brush while establishing survey lines. ( machete use)
  • Knowledge of equipment and the ability to set up for various types for different work situations.
  • Ability to hold and proficiently use all measuring devices.
