Catholic Diocese of Lansing is Hiring a Business Manager Near Howell, MI

St. John’s long-time Business Manager will be retiring at the end of our current fiscal year, June 30, 2024. This position is vital to the Parish and will involve a training period for the transition. Therefore, we are starting the process to find our next Business Manager now. This will be a 30-40 hour per week position Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm, depending on our filling the current open part-time Bookkeeper position.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business. CPA certification preferred. Must have experience with accounting software, and be fluent in Microsoft Excel and Word. Two years of experience as an administrator or manager is preferred. The applicant must be a practicing Catholic, active in a parish.
Salary is commensurate with educational background and work experience. Benefits are available.

Job Description:
Accountability: Reports to Pastor
Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises administrative staff and custodial when Maintenance Manager is absent
FLSA Status:Exempt
Hours: Full-time (30-40 hours per week)
General Summary:This position assists with the ministry of the parish by overseeing the general office and financial activities of the parish and cemetery. The incumbent directs these efforts with technical expertise within a framework of shared ministry, stewardship, and Catholic values.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Finance
  • Prepare a yearly budget (in consultation with the pastor and parish finance council), monthly accounting reports, and reports requested by the pastor or the parish finance council.
  • Manage all banking activities including the accounting and banking of Sunday collections, payables and receivables. Ensure timely payments and deposits.
  • Manage and prepare all accounting, budgetary, fiscal, and statistical records, with particular attention to annual reports to the Diocese of Lansing and the parish, along with monthly reports to the parish staff and parish finance council.
  • Prepare and administer all payroll functions.
  • Serve with the pastor, as the staff liaison to the parish finance council and periodically report on the condition of the parish's physical assets, along with the administrative status of the parish.
  • Insure the filing of all required federal, state and diocesan reports.
  • Monitor and oversee budgetary compliance for all departments.
  • Research and monitor service contracts, suppliers and vendors for fair pricing and competitive bidding.
Facilities
  • Oversee the management of parish facilities (collecting rentals, maintaining insurance coverage, etc.).
  • Works with the Pastor and Maintenance Manager in some aspects of the care, maintenance, and replacement of parish buildings and equipment, including the securing of bids, the negotiating of contracts, and the purchasing of supplies and equipment.
  • Makes pertinent capital repairs recommendations to the parish finance council.
  • Reviews all arrangements and contracts with outside contractors and keeps track of terms.
Personnel
  • Coordinate all administrative and business activities of the parish, religious education, youth ministry, and other parish entities with regards to human resources, e.g. salaries, personnel policies, etc.
  • Train, supervise (as needed), any Parish personnel and report to Pastor for evaluation. Administer all parish personnel policies.
  • Develop and recommend to the pastor and other appropriate parish staff persons the necessary policies, methods, and procedures needed for carrying out financial, accounting, and other administrative services.
  • Supervises: Accounting Staff, Parish Secretary and Janitorial Personnel (when Maintenance Mgr absent).
  • Serve as Safe Environment Coordinator.
Other Administrative
  • Oversees the timely opening of the office each day.
  • Coordinates, recruits, orients, trains and supports volunteers.
  • Records all Funerals in the sacramental record book.
  • Prepares bulk mailings as needed.
  • Maintain schedule of office hours for staff.
  • Maintain the parish offering envelope system regularly.
  • Provides charitable assistance supported by the parish and/or through referring persons to the appropriate charitable or social agencies.
Cemetery
  • Assure that burials are completed properly in accordance with the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church.
  • Assist families with locating grave spaces, selecting grave, and completing the proper contractual agreements.
  • Follow written policies, procedures, and guidelines for maintaining cemetery records, files, and supporting documentations.
  • Complete sales and interment records as required.
  • Records all Funerals in the sacramental record book.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business. CPA certification preferred.
Experience:Minimum of two years of experience as an administrator or manager of an office required. Fluent knowledge of Microsoft Excel, and Word required. Must have experience with accounting software. Must have an understanding of Catholic parish organization.
Require: May require occasional evening work.
Physical Demands: While performing duties, employee has to sit for long periods of time, use hands in repetitive motion tasks, and answer telephone calls. The position also requires some standing, stooping, and bending while filing. Employee is expected to work onsite, Monday-Friday, with minimal travel. Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
