Position Description

Position Summary

Under general supervision and in cooperation with the Associate Director of Custodial Services, the Lead Custodian prioritizes and coordinates the work of an area, laying-out, assigning, directing, and assisting the work of custodians and student assistants in the performance of custodial work, as well as monitor and ensure the completion of custodial duties.

The Lead Custodian will properly maintain workstation (clean offices, laboratories, classrooms, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, etc.). A neatly organized and well-stocked custodial locker and cart with well-kept, functioning equipment properly assigned to that location. Thorough and accurate accounting of time and materials. Completion of routine work assignments and performance of additional duties as assigned. Follow-up on every project or task to ensure that all items are completed to the satisfaction of the FS Director. Maintains a responsible attendance record and consistently meets deadlines. Builds and maintains internal and external customer satisfaction with the products and services offered by the organization.

The Lead Custodian also works to instill in others the importance of workplace safety rules and regulations and takes appropriate actions. Ability to conduct hazard assessments and address those hazards; accordingly, promptly follows-up on health and safety risks, taking appropriate actions and providing the necessary reports and documentation.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Wednesday – Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday – Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

SDSU Facilities Services (FS), a department of Business and Financial Affairs, is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 250 employees (full time and students) and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land with an operating budget of approximately forty-five million dollars.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to one to two years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Valid California Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

  • Working knowledge of the methods, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work and of the safety and sanitation practices and measures; and effective lead/supervisory practices and techniques.
  • Five years of work experience as a Custodian or equivalent position is preferred.
  • Completion of APPA Supervisor’s Toolkit or equivalent training is preferred.
  • Three or more years of experience leading or supervising employees is preferred.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education and training is preferred.
  • Experience maintaining wood flooring surfaces, vinyl composite tile, LVT, asbestos composite tile and carpet care.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,680 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,347 - $5,498 per month.
