Blue Hill at Stone Barns is Hiring a Sous Chef, Events Near Tarrytown, NY

Calling all chefs interested in working at the intersection of event hospitality and sustainable agriculture.

About The Role:

Blue Hill at Stone Barns is seeking a skilled and passionate Sous Chef to lead our Events Department. Together with our nonprofit partner, Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, we are dedicated to providing exceptional and memorable culinary experiences rooted in local sourcing and regenerative agriculture at events held on our premises.

The Events Sous Chef will be responsible for leading the catering service team. You will oversee the Event Line Cooks and ensure the proper preparation and execution of meals for corporate functions, weddings, and other events of up to 260 guests.

As such, you will have the opportunity to participate in weekly education with guest speakers, classes, and training, and be eligible for a stipend for external education and dining opportunities.

About You:

  • Regulatory compliance: you adhere to all cleanliness, health, and safety protocols, including knowledge of applicable fire, health, and safety codes (possession of a Food Handlers Certificate or ServSafe Certification is a plus).
  • Experience: minimum 3 years as a Sous Chef in a high volume, fine dining restaurant or catering environment, or equivalent certification, and corresponding knowledge and experience of advanced culinary techniques is required. High school diploma or equivalent desired; diploma from a culinary school is a plus.

Tasks may include: 

  • Developing, standardizing, and implementing recipes and menus; tailoring recipes to meet specific dietary requirements and preferences as needed.
  • Overseeing the creation of daily mise en place lists, ensuring ingredient quality and supervising ingredient preparation and assembly.
  • Conducting Cook’s and Sous Chef’s meetings in the Events Department.
  • Ensuring all dishes are prepared and presented to the highest standards of excellence and consistency.
  • Collaborating closely with event managers and all other parties to ensure seamless execution of events.
  • Complying with all health department standards and practices and maintaining a clean and orderly work environment at all times.
  • Performing all other job-related duties. This position requires manual dexterity and the ability to follow oral/written instructions and procedures. To successfully perform duties, you must be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds and stand for long periods.

The Details:

  • Location & Hours: Full time position in-person at Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, NY (~1 hr drive from NYC). Shifts involve working evenings and weekends.
