BioLabs is Hiring a Lab Operations Manager (Contract) Near Cambridge, MA

We are seeking a Lab & Operations Manager to contribute to the development and execution of our business plan and long-term growth strategy. Through a rapidly growing network of global locations (currently 11 in US and 2 in Europe), our collaborative lab space model is uniquely designed for scientific entrepreneurs to test, develop, grow, and commercialize their game-changing ideas. Each location supports entrepreneurial scientists with premium, fully equipped, and supported laboratory, and office spaces alongside unparalleled access to capital and industry partners.

ROLE OVERVIEW 

The Lab Operations Manager, Boston, embodies excellent customer service, sparks innovation in every task, seeks information resourcefully, and drives to create an energetic and safe atmosphere where BioLabs members thrive. The Lab Operations Manager is responsible for overall laboratory operations while assisting in all duties associated with running a co-working lab space. As a tactical leader, the Lab Operations Manager possess the ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a team environment. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee office and lab onboarding (safety, intro to space, key forms, maintain database/checklists) and shared equipment/space training for all members and staff.
  • Oversee office and lab offboarding, ensuring all loaned equipment is returned and lab bench/office areas are properly decommissioned and prepared for next member.
  • Be the first point of contact for all office and lab related emergencies and equipment notifications.
  • Perform routine equipment QC, quickly address repairs, and maintain equipment database/SOPs.
  • Contact equipment vendors to obtain quotes for repairs and equipment needs.
  • Place orders for shared lab consumables and manage supply inventory control/logistics. Implement cost-saving strategies where possible.
  • Foster collaborations between residents and third parties such as sponsors, researchers, and strategic partners.
  • Assist with sponsor fulfillment: organizing office hours, monthly events, relationship development.
  • Assist members in navigating the BioLabs Marketplace for purchasing, training, troubleshooting, tracking packages, etc.
  • Notify and deliver arriving packages. Interface with vendors and third-party suppliers as needed. Assist with troubleshooting as needed.
  • Manage laboratory space to maximize effective square footage, factoring equipment utilization, workflow, and assigned bench allocations.
  • Review protocols of research groups to stay abreast of research projects in the laboratory at any given time.
  • Provide support in all phases of site relocation and expansion projects as needed.
  • Ensure that the laboratory is regularly cleaned/sanitized and kept in an orderly manner.
  • Serve as the local Environmental, Health, and Safety officer, ensuring:
  • Lab meets local, state, and federal regulatory compliance always, maintaining appropriate permits, and passes audits both internal and external.
  • Lab safety plans/manuals are updated and maintained. Appropriate signage, spill kits, emergency supplies exist.
  • Chemical inventories and MSDS documentation are accurate and current.
  • Chemical and biohazard waste is properly handled, stored, and disposed of in a timely manner.
  • Safety equipment is monitored monthly to ensure functionality: eyewash, showers, extinguishers.
  • The safest environment possible for all members and staff by mandating and monitoring individual safety compliances: training, PPE, etc.
  • Any cases of non-compliance are immediately documented and addressed.
  • Work with broader BioLabs operations team to explore, create, and enact best practices.
  • Multitask and prioritize as necessary to meet customer needs.
  • Provide excellent customer service and attention to detail.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Scientific/Laboratory-related experience in an academic or commercial environment.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s-level scientific education with commensurate experience preferred.
  • Customer service focused, with an excellent work ethic and an optimistic attitude.
  • Highly organized, entrepreneurial, and results driven.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand mission and goals of resident companies, scientific milestones, and commercialization process.
  • Experience with billing, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, an effective listener and proactive relationship builder.
  • Self-motivated, routinely initiate and deliver projects successfully with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and be able to stand for multiple hours at a time.
  • Strong IT skills, including troubleshooting.
