Job Description

The is a non-profit biomedical research enterprise that is empowering a revolution in biomedicine to accelerate the pace at which the world conquers disease. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

The Senior Lab Operations Manager will join the Laboratory Operations (Lab Ops) team to support a dynamic group Laboratory administrators, managers, and scientists to manage and develop institutional laboratory processes, including working with colleagues in evaluating and developing technical procedures, protocols, and operational best practices, serving as a resource for all laboratory managers and operations personnel, and acting as a liaison to ensure laboratory requirements are met. This role will require five days onsite, with occasional flexibility.

Specific responsibilities would include the following:

  • Providing insight, assistance, and support during laboratory space evaluations, renovations, decommissioning, and move activities when needed.

  • Establishing a professional development program for lab operations personnel which includes: mentorship programs, networking opportunities, professional development activities, and workshops.

  • Supporting the Lab Managers at Broad group by sponsoring events, external speakers, or seminars.

  • Supporting Lab Ops regular weekly office hours for consistent interaction with laboratory management and operations personnel.

  • Supporting the Associate Director, establishing and leading monthly meetings with other administrative teams that interact regularly with BLOG/LaMBs teams, such as Communications, Procurement, and Facilities.

  • Assisting Lab Managers with utilizing resources (i.e. Bookit) to better manage lab operations in their groups.

  • Developing and maintaining an annual Broad Lab Operations Training seminar for young researchers in preparation for future lab setup and trainees interested in the laboratory operations career.

  • Working closely with the Associate Director in the development and maintenance of the new Lab Operations Web Page aiming to provide information, support, feedback, and previous recording and notes of BLOG/LaMBs/EHS meetings.

  • Additional responsibilities per the request of the Director and/or Associate Director of Lab Operations.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Partnering with the Associate Director of Laboratory Operations in overseeing and improving lab operations across Broad, while preserving the working relationships of PI's and their lab managers.

  • Working closely with the lab community in areas of policy development, training, and education such as onboarding new incoming lab managers; organizing and coordinating seminars and/or educational trainings; and hosting office hours.

  • Developing accountability and monitoring consistency in lab management and operations across the Institute with regular meetings, performing routine laboratory checks, and creating an official Broad laboratory operations manual which will standardize practices and policies

  • With the Associate Director of Laboratory Operations continually monitoring, identifying and addressing potential areas of vulnerabilities, including, for example: institutional equipment support and backup; laboratory space management; and training and career development support for the lab manager and the lab operations matrix.

  • Develop agendas and meeting topics for the BLOG, LAMBs, and associated meetings as well as leading meetings in conjunction with the Associate Director of Laboratory Operations.

  • Assisting the Associate Director of Laboratory Operations work with budget development and financial tracking.

  • Other duties as directed by the Associate Director, Laboratory Operations or the Director of Environmental Health & Safety.

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 7 years of experience in laboratory operations with a Masters degree

  • Ability to think strategically both short and long-term with the capacity to see the big picture overview

  • Experience in developing, implementing, and improving workflows and processes

  • Excellent knowledge of computers and experience with databases required

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with all levels of staff and with external contacts in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to influence others and to build working relationships

  • Excellent organization and time management skills with demonstrated ability to keep good organizational documentation.

  • Excellent multi-tasking and creative problem-solving skills.

  • Must possess a high level of initiative and the ability to work with little supervision.
