Broad Institute is Hiring a Postdoctoral Associate - Bacterial Genomics Group Near Cambridge, MA

Job Description

The Bacterial Genomics group at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is seeking a creative and highly motivated postdoc with experience in genomic epidemiology to join the team. The candidate would play a key role in a new five-year research project involving large-scale epidemiological and genomic surveillance of antimicrobial resistant pathogens across a network of nursing homes, and would help to develop and apply analytical methods to identify patterns of bacterial spread. This role will involve close collaboration with an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional team, bioinformatic and statistical analysis of large datasets, and developing novel approaches to derive epidemiological insight from pathogen genomic data. The ideal candidate will have experience in pathogen genomic epidemiology, proficiency in at least one programming language, a track record in microbial genome research and excellent communication skills. The Bacterial Genomics group offers a highly collaborative and supportive work environment, and comprises a team of researchers and trainees at all levels, which values teamwork, innovation, creativity and mentorship.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Biological Sciences or a related field

  • Comfort and experience with programming for biological data analysis

  • Demonstrated attention to detail

  • Excellent ability to communicate scientific material

  • Excellent organization and time management skills

  • Excellent collaborative skills and enthusiasm for genomic science

Desired Skills

  • Experience in pathogen genomic epidemiology methods, such as outbreak analysis, microbial phylodynamics

  • Experience with cloud computing, cluster computing and parallelization

  • Experience developing computational tools/analytical methods

  • Understanding of bacterial genetics

  • Experience with grant writing

The Broad Institute is an amazing place - we apply our deep knowledge of human and microbial genetics to empower a revolution in bio-medicine and accelerate the pace at which the world conquers disease. Through our partnerships with MIT, Harvard, and the Harvard teaching hospitals, we've become a worldwide hub of cutting-edge biomedical science.

The Bacterial Genomics Group within the Genome Center for Infectious Diseases at the Broad Institute tackles pressing questions related to bacteria and their role in human health. We work in a dynamic and rich training environment, connected to groups across the Broad community and to clinical and academic researchers from around the globe. We devise and carry out large-scale studies that generate genomic, metagenomic and transcriptomic data sets that we use to understand human pathologies like tuberculosis, recurrent urinary tract infections and life-threatening infections caused by hospital adapted pathogens.

We solve puzzles -- We use diverse analytical approaches to understand how key pathogens evolve and interact with their host and host-associated microbiota.

We love "big data" -- Our team develops data analysis strategies, writes algorithms and leverages grid and cloud computing for the integration and exploration of thousands of 'omics data sets (i.e., genomes, transcriptomes, microbiomes).

We work as a team -- From project start to finish, we work closely with each other and with clinical and experimental researchers to design and execute studies that test critical biomedical hypotheses, including interpretation of analytical results for validation and publication.
