Counsel - Institute Legal

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is a world class research organization with a mission to accelerate biomedical discoveries and the dissemination of information to the general public. Broad convenes a community of leading researchers from MIT, Harvard and the Harvard-affiliated hospitals who work in Broad's collaborative environment to understand the biological mechanisms of disease, invent new technologies, build and implement computational tools, develop therapeutics, and share data and tools openly to enable breakthroughs anywhere. Broad aims to ensure that the benefits of genomic medicine are shared by all.

Institute Legal is a team of attorneys and legal support staff who support Broad in all of its administrative and scientific functions, including educating and advising the Broad community on a range of legal matters; negotiating and drafting business and real estate agreements; reviewing and implementing policies and procedures; advising on legal risk relative to potential business decisions; interpreting and synthesizing the law into plain language to provide practical business solutions; and much more.

This role reports to Senior Counsel and will primarily focus on employment related matters. This role will also require a minimum of three days onsite, with the flexibility to come in additional days as needed.

The candidate will also assist Senior Counsel in providing advice and guidance on a full range of initiatives with legal implications across Broad, including, but not limited to, contracts; data privacy and security; governance and Institute affairs; healthcare; facilities and real estate; litigation and dispute resolution; etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports Senior Counsel on employment matters including by assisting in providing day-to-day advice and guidance to Broad Human Resources on a range of legal issues, e.g., employee relations, internal concerns of Broad policy violations, accommodations, benefits, regulatory and policy compliance, evolving legal requirements, etc.

  • Assists in analyzing, negotiating, drafting, reviewing and revising employee related agreements, policies and systems relative to employment with and consulting/independent contractor relationships with Broad.

  • Assists in advising the Culture & Professionalism Team in employee investigations.

  • Assists in advising the Office of Academic Affairs in research misconduct investigations.

  • Assists in managing outside counsel on employment related matters, including external employment investigations and responding to demand letters and MCAD/EEOC charges.

  • Assists in providing advice and guidance on various other legal matters, including contracts; data privacy and security; governance and Institute affairs; healthcare; facilities and real estate; litigation and dispute resolution; and much more.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in labor and employment law, ideally within a law firm or in-house.

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school in the United States.

  • Admission to practice law in Massachusetts; must be in good standing.

  • Clerkship experience preferred, but not required.

  • Academic, non-profit or pharma/biotech experience is desirable, but not required.

  • Strong ability to synthesize information and distill complex legal issues into practical business solutions that are legally compliant and easily understood by internal stakeholders.

  • Outstanding writer and legal researcher.

  • Clear and concise communicator.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Clear thinking and proactive.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and keep key stakeholders informed.

  • Strong interpersonal skills in interacting with individuals with diverse educational and professional backgrounds and skill levels.

  • High emotional intelligence; must possess a calming and empathetic approach to communicating with others.

  • Ability to manage time and effectively deal with competing interests and deadlines.

  • Strong work ethic; commitment to excellence.

  • Must be able to thrive in a fast paced environment.

  • Passion for science, medicine and research.
