Position Summary:
The Routing and Planning Specialist - Federal Programs develops routes and transportation strategies related to Federal programs within the district and surrounding areas. The incumbent communicates directly with the McKinney Vento liaisons to ensure proper placement on either district buses or eight passenger vehicles or in a contracted alternative vehicle provider's vehicle. The Specialist directly manages contracted drivers in alternate vehicles contracted by Atlanta Public Schools, ensuring accurate route execution and student ridership.
Essential Dutieas:
Plans, coordinates, and oversees the routing, scheduling, and daily transportation services of McKinney-Vento students and students with special needs being transported by an alternative vehicle provider.
Ensures compliance with time schedules and applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
Builds and maintains effective relations with both intra-district and interdistrict personnel.
Reviews McKinney Vento requests and makes fiscally responsible decisions regarding the transportation of McKinney Vento students
May function as a liaison and information link between stakeholders to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of McKinney-Vento students and students with special needs being transported by an alternative vehicle provider, including but not limited to evaluating needs and requirements, explaining policies and procedures, and ensuring that accurate information is communicated to all stakeholders.
Provides information and assistance to stakeholders pertaining to routing issues; assists with evaluating and resolving complaints and issues.
Plans and coordinates McKinney Vento students' bus routes between temporary housing and schools, frequently modifying and adjusting routes as student changes occur.
Enters routing and student data into computerized transportation routing systems; monitors, updates, and ensures the accuracy of all system data; monitors, runs, and ensures accuracy of all required reports.
Maintains report of "no-show" student riders and facilitates communication between stakeholders to meet students’ transportation needs.
Participates in periodic assessments of program effectiveness and/or changing needs.
Acknowledges team accomplishments and ensures progress towards team and department goals.
Responds to requests for service and assistance in a timely manner.
Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours, and as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Knowledge of the City of Atlanta and surrounding counties, traffic density patterns, and resources.
Knowledge of routing software and the ability to enter and update data in the system.
Knowledge of McKinney Vento laws and regulations, as well as laws, regulations, codes, and policies relating to pupil transportation, particularly as it applies to routing requirements and procedures
Ability to synthesize complex or diverse information and collect and research data and identify data relationships and dependencies
Effectively communicates within and outside of APS to ensure students are processed for a transportation solution
Strong sense of urgency
Ability to identify problems in a timely manner and create alternative solutions.
Ability to collaborate well in group problem-solving situations

High School diploma or GED required
Bachelor's Degree preferred
