WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional accounting experience
  • Prior nonprofit accounting experience preferred, but not required
  • Strict attention to detail, highly organized and efficient
  • Strong numeracy, analytical, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of GAAP
  • Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with Workday Adaptive preferred

Qualifications


ABOUT THE ROLE

The Staff Accountant's responsibilities include maintaining financial records and reports, performing account reconciliations, assisting with budget and monthly close processes, and maintaining general ledger documentation. Other responsibilities include monitoring, analyzing and maintaining financial transactions for a wide variety of social service programs, tracking revenues and expenditures, and preparing required internal and external financial reports.

AJSOCAL has complex program offerings and diverse funding sources, including state, federal, corporate, and foundation funding. There is a heavy emphasis on reporting, requiring this role to focus narrowly on the finance function.

Your day-to-day responsbilities:

40% General Accounting

  • Prepare journal entries, analyses, and account reconciliations, and assist with the monthly close process
  • Support the monthly closing process by keeping balance sheet account schedules that support balances in the general ledger
  • Prepare monthly budget to actua lvariances and explain variances
  • Substantiate general ledger financial transactions by reviewing and verifying supporting documentation
  • Reconcile assigned monthly bank statements and investigate and correct any discrepancies between the bank statements and the general ledger
  • Support the annual financial audit and any monitoring visits from grant funders

40% Grant Accounting

  • Maintain knowledge of all open grants, invoicing dates, and reporting requirementsfor all grants in assigned program units
  • Assist in performing grant-related functions, including pre-application budget preparation, budget and expense reporting, invoicing, financial reporting, labor distribution changes, and budget modifications
  • Prepare detailed monthly budget to actual variance analyses for assigned grants
  • Assist in ensuring that grant opportunities in Salesforce and Workday Adaptive are synchronized so that all pre-award grants in Salesforce are also listed in Adaptive and assigned the correct probability rating
  • Continuous monitoring of both Workday Adaptive and QuickBooks to ensure grant transactions are recorded accurately
  • On a biweekly or monthly basis, assist in allocating all unallocated non-personnel expenses to grants under the direction of the supervisor
  • Monitor grant receivables monthly by meeting with AR Coordinator to ensure timely payment of grant receivables or identify if receivables need to be written off
  • Maintain and update Federal SEFA schedule monthly

20% Other Finance/Accounting functions

  • Contribute to the development and review of annual operating budgets and unit projections
  • Serve as a backupfor other accounting department functions including Payroll, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
  • Analyze current procedures and recommend changes to develop and implement best practice accounting procedures
  • All other duties as assigned
