Amputee Coalition is Hiring a Director, Government Relations Near Washington, DC

Who we are:
Our mission is to reach out to and empower people affected by limb loss to achieve their full potential through education, support, and advocacy and promote limb loss prevention.

What we do:
Whether it is reaching individuals who have recently experienced amputations to provide critical recovery information, fighting for fair insurance laws, or providing daily tips to make living with limb loss more accessible, the work of the Amputee Coalition is impacting lives every day.

Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Chief Programs Officer, the Director of Government Relations will be responsible for monitoring federal legislation and regulations that impact the limb loss/limb difference community and supporting projects and programs administered by the government relations department. The Director of Government Relations works with and manages the Amputee Coalition’s Government Relations team to coordinate state and federal initiatives and engagement with advocates. The Director of Government Relations will also represent the Amputee Coalition with policymakers and partners in coordination with the Chief Programs Officer, Chief Executive Officer, and other organizational leadership. This position is responsible for aligning Amputee Coalition’s core values, mission statement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion policy with all government initiatives.

Responsibilities:
• Provide administrative support and is the lead staff liaison for Amputee Coalition Lead Advocates and all related workgroups.
• Identify and implement legislative agenda to support department’s strategic vision. Serve as point of contact for matters about the department, including but not limited to Advocacy Forum, National Conference, and regional conferences.
• Grow and nurture relationships with Members of Congress and appropriate staff members to advance the needs of the limb loss and limb difference community.
• Develop and coordinate advocacy activities around “Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month” to raise awareness about issues impacting the limb loss community.
• Foster and explain policy positions on various issues that affect people with limb loss, the Amputee Coalition, or the broader limb loss community.
• Implements communications strategies that best serve the needs of the limb loss community and the Amputee Coalition in policy discussions.
• Serves as initial contact for the Amputee Coalition in meetings with legislative bodies, government agencies, and policymakers to maintain working relationships and appropriate lines of communication as needed.
• Maintains an active presence with advocacy partners, like-minded organizations, and agencies and represents the needs of the limb loss community and the Amputee Coalition.
• Oversees the development of materials and fact sheets, including web content, articles, and print publications about advocacy.

• Works with the Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator and the communications department to update government relations pages on the Amputee Coalition website.
• Design and implement outreach strategies to build and enhance grassroots engagement.
• Identify areas to expand reach into underserved communities and implement measures to ensure that grassroots programs positively impact those communities.
• Presents at state and national meetings on Amputee Coalition policy priorities.
• Organizes updates and works to train advocates to participate in the Amputee Coalition’s Lead Advocate Program.
• Develops new and innovative training modules and sessions to engage advocates.
• Manage and coordinate efforts with hired consultants/lobbyists as needed.

Qualifications

Required:
• Master’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Health, or related discipline (or commiserate experience).
• Ability to research and write policy briefs.
• Experience working with people with a physical disability.
• Experience managing government relations projects.
• Experience directly supervising staff.
• Minimum ten years of experience in Government Relations in a non-profit health-related organization.
• Excellent administrative, oral, written, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
• A clear understanding of federal and state legislative processes and navigating legislation.
• Computer skills and knowledge of software needed to compile information for policy analysis and communications.
• Budget and expense knowledge.
• Capable of working independently and collaboratively with teams.
• Commitment to working with people from diverse academic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Event planning knowledge.
• Must be a critical and strategic thinker, attentive to detail with solid follow-through.

Preferred:
• Experience utilizing online tools for database management and online meeting presentations.
• Ability to effectively present policy issues and conduct training for limb loss/limb difference community members, professionals, and others.
• Ability to problem solve, exercise judgment, and work with minimal direction.
• Public affairs principles and practices.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal legislative and executive processes.
• Project management and planning principles and practices.
• Statewide knowledge of limb loss and limb difference policy initiatives that impact equitable access.
• Communicate complex concepts through oral and written formats.

Director, Government Relations
Salary, hours, and benefits:
• Salary is commensurate with experience.
• Amputee-Coalition offers health Insurance, 401k Retirement plan, PTO, thirteen paid holidays, and reimbursement for continuing education.
• Full-time/Exempt, remote position.

Supervisory:
This position has one direct report.

Work environment/travel:
• Amputee Coalition is a fully remote organization; employees/temporary/contract employees are expected to operate independently from a home office.
• Requires occasional night or weekend work for this role.
• May require some in-person meetings, events, or conferences from time to time.
• May require overnight travel of up to ten trips per year.
