BNY Mellon is seeking a Director of Policy Advocacy to develop and execute a strategy to message and advance BNY Mellon’s public policy and government affairs priorities; build the bank’s public profile in Washington, DC on policy issues and deepen engagement with third parties and key partners. 

The ideal candidate is a strategic, collaborative and creative communicator and messenger who sits at the intersection of financial services, advocacy and engagement. In this role, you will work in collaboration with colleagues on the Public Policy and Government Affairs (PPGA) team to develop and execute a communications advocacy strategies and campaigns to advance the bank’s public policy and government affairs priorities with targeted collaborators and channels to help position the bank with policy makers, clients and other stakeholders. You will establish yourself as a trusted advisor and collaborator, working with partners across the bank, including the Marketing and Communications and Legal teams, various lines of business, Investor Relations, and the Office of the CEO. This role will report directly to the Head of US Government Affairs and will be based in Washington, DC. 

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways: 

  • Develop and execute engagement strategies and proactive campaigns to inform and educate policy makers, opinion leaders and the relevant stakeholders and to help to advance BNY Mellon’s public policy priorities
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the Public Policy and Government Affairs (PPGA) team to understand the regulatory and legislative environment that impacts our business in the US and globally
  • Create advocacy materials that distill complex policy messages and resonate across a range of audiences, including policymakers, third parties, the media and clients, helping to connect the dots on key policy issues across regions and audiences
  • Work collaboratively and cross functionally including with the Communications team to identify policy threats and opportunities and develop proactive and reactive communications strategies to help educate and advance key public policy priorities 
  • Identify and seek out opportunities to position BNY Mellon and key executives as thought leaders on key policy priorities, including executing thought leadership policy events
  • Ensure that all materials are consistent with the company’s brand and messaging
  • Build and leverage relationships with key partners, thought leaders and other third parties to build coalitions and help message and advance key public policy priorities

To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following: 

  • 10 years of public engagement, communications, public relations, or related experience leading policy communications in a Congressional, regulatory or public policy context or for a financial service firm or trade association – ideally with experience in both the public and private sector.
  • A deep understanding of financial services and the policy, regulatory and political landscape in a highly regulated industry
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to distill complex policies and information in succinct and compelling ways with diverse audiences.
  • Proven experience leading and executing on complex issues across multiple stakeholders in a dynamic environment and in crisis and sensitive situations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range on internal and external stakeholders with the ability to independently execute tasks and deliver results
  • Creativity, curiosity and a self-starter demeanor with the ability to adapt quickly to changing needs and thrive in fast-paced environments
