CFP BD OF STANDARD CTR FOR FINANCIAL PLANNING is Hiring a Manager, Government Relations and Public Policy Near Washington, DC

Under general supervision, the Manager of Government Relations and Public Policy advances CFP Board’s federal and state legislative priorities and promotes CFP Board’s agenda to Members of Congress, their staff, state legislative bodies and organizations, and others who influence federal and state policymaking. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of and experience with legislative processes and culture, and an ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Essential Functions

  • Using software and other resources, monitor, track, and provide a fundamental analysis of federal and state legislative proposals to determine policy implications of key bills in issue areas that are CFP Board priorities. Monitor committee hearings, briefings, and mark ups, as necessary.
  • Under the direction of the Managing Director, conduct outreach to congressional and committee staff in a bipartisan fashion on organizational policy goals. Develop and maintain a working relationship with key Hill contacts. 
  • Support the development and implementation of CFP Board’s legislative priorities by contributing to ongoing team dialogue, strategy development and assessment. Assist in developing legislative strategies, including communications and alliances in support of the legislative priority.
  • Conduct research and analysis as necessary to support advocacy initiatives.
  • As requested, represent CFP Board in Capitol Hill meetings and at conferences, receptions, and other events.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director and outside lobby firm on the development of a targeted outreach plan to support engagement with congressional members and staff, including committee staff, of strategic importance to CFP Board.
  • As directed by the Managing Director, draft, process internally, and disseminate CFP Board’s written communications to Capitol Hill or other policymakers, including state legislatures. This includes organizational letters to Congress, position papers, fact sheets, testimony, and other written documents.
  • Ensure that an organized and accessible repository of CFP Board's public policy positions is maintained.
  • In furtherance of CFP Board’s policy agenda, help to build and strengthen strategic partnerships with financial services firms, industry trade associations and investor advocate groups. Participate in approved coalitions to promote CFP Board's legislative and public policy positions, playing a leadership role when appropriate.
  • Consult/advise on certificant advocacy engagement, as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Managing Director.

Background/Skills/Abilities Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years’ experience working as staff on Capitol Hill or in a position that provided experience working with Congress, and demonstrated knowledge of the legislative process, congressional operations, and culture.
  • Knowledge of and experience working on financial services policy issues preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with regulatory policy or rulemaking preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, especially the ability to communicate policy ideas and legislative proposals concisely and effectively – both in writing and orally.
  • Strong networking and relationship building skills. 
  • Experience building and working in coalitions.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Professional, confident, and approachable demeanor. 
  • Self-directed and detail oriented.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and time management skills with strong attention to detail. 
  • Ability to multi-task various assignments, prioritize work, adjust to multiple demands, and meet deadlines.
  • Possess a proactive work style that anticipates the need of their supervisor and colleagues.
  • Ability to take personal responsibility and ownership for delivering on organizational commitments.
  • Flexibility to adjust and contribute to continually evolving work situations and changing priorities.

This position works on programs which are part of the 501 (c)(3) and 501 (c)(6). 

This position is based in the Washington D.C. office and works a hybrid schedule which could be changed at any time.
