Allentown Symphony Association is Hiring a House Manager Near Allentown, PA

House Manager – Miller Symphony Hall
Reports to: Box Office Manager
Job Status: Part-time, Year-round
Start Date: April 2023
Salary: $15 Hourly
Description:
Allentown Symphony Association (ASA) seeks House Manager candidates who have experience in delivering excellent
customer service during in-person circumstances. The House manager will be responsible for managing front-of-house
operations for all events at Miller Symphony Hall (MSH), including events in the Rodale Room and the Lyric Room, and
coordinating volunteer ushers for every event. Customer service and safety will be the dual priorities of this position,
ensuring that all front-of-house staff hold the same priorities and deliver the highest degree of customer service each time
we open our doors. In addition, the House Manager is responsible for clerical administration regarding coordination,
scheduling and recruiting volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Event Management
  • Be present at all Symphony, Jazz, Met Opera, Meet the Artist and rental events that involve ticket sales and/or
crowd control.
  • Exhibit the highest degree of customer service to all patrons under every circumstance and lead all front-of-house
staff and volunteers in achieving this same goal.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all patrons at every performance and event.
  • Conduct pre-event safety inspection to correct problems as needed and prioritize maintenance as needed.
  • Prior to the house opening, coordinate curtain times and holds with Director of Hall Operations/Production
Manager, house warning lights and communications with backstage.
  • Walk house during performance to check on security and safety, staff and volunteer performance, cleanliness and
repair of the facility, and to identify and solve any patron issues that arise.
  • At the end of each performance or event, ensure that all patrons and staff have departed, close and lock all doors
and turn off all lights.
  • Create house report at the end of each event, documenting any incidents that occur; ensure that all staff involved
in incidents write and sign an Incident Report as part of the house report.
  • Act as front-of-house contact for all emergencies. Represent MSH to emergency responders. Evacuate as directed
by Allentown Fire Department and as specified in the ASA and MSH emergency action plans.
  • Assist all front of house departments during events to insure a seamless, pleasant and customer service-oriented

operation for all our patrons. These include donor events, valet and traffic operation, security, concessions, and
ushers.

Volunteer Management (Lyric Society)
  • Maintain Lyric society database, volunteer event calendar and scheduling of volunteers.
  • Communicate with volunteers regularly regarding availability in order to create and maintain volunteer schedule for
each event.
  • Develop volunteer job descriptions and promotional materials to advertise and recruit volunteers.
  • Actively recruit new volunteers and serve as the first contact for all potential volunteers. Attend recruitment events

as needed.

  • Plan, schedule and execute volunteer orientation and training events as needed.
  • Assist with planning yearly volunteer recognition event.

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma. College degree (complete or in progress) preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, organizational, leadership and problem-solving skills, as well as a
track record of employment involving the delivery of excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a large group of staff and efficiently delegate responsibilities while
handling conflict with grace and compassion.
  • Knowledge of front-of-house operations and theatre staff roles.
  • Ability to walk or remain standing for prolonged periods of time during events.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work various hours, including holidays, weekends and evenings and attend bi-weekly staff meetings.
