San Bernardino Community College District is Hiring a Professional Expert - Transitional Work Crew Trainer Near San Bernardino, CA

Summary Description:

Under the direction of the Project Administrator, the Transitional Work Crew Trainer is responsible for the oversite of transitional work crew trainees while they are performing program task.

Representative Duties:

The following duties are typical for this classification.

* Inspects and prepares transportation vehicles for daily operation requirements, perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, and completes required documentation to report any damage or defects of vehicles and associated equipment when applicable. Diagnose and make minor repairs to equipment/vehicles to ensure they are in proper working condition.

* May operate commercial vans with trailer, and maneuvers in difficult spaces and under challenging weather conditions. Operate hand-free mobile phones or communications radios.

* Assists the Project Administrator by completing the weekly work schedules and work reports for work crew trainees. Assist the Project Administrator with providing daily work sites, training, and tools to utilize for assignments.

* Responsible for monitoring, training, and supervising work crew activities. Takes appropriate action to eliminate unsafe or dangerous conditions in accordance with established guidelines, effectively identifies training needs, and ensures that all necessary job-related instruction is provided to work crew in a timely manner. May assist in demonstrating and training on job-related safety measures and work environment.

* Responsible for record-keeping and filing activities, collects work performance and program operations data, and prepares reports.

* Assigns and accounts for tools, materials, and equipment issued to program trainees for daily work projects. Prepares and maintains daily employment activity documentation.

* Responsible for monitoring and ensuring work crew compliance with projects and other work activities as assigned. Ensures participants are properly accounted for prior to and during transition between work sites when applicable.

* Complies with occupational safety standards in the performance and supervision of work by program work crews to complete work assignments. Report incidents and emergencies to the Project Administrator, and Caltrans and/or public safety officials as appropriate and complies with administrative directions for work crew supervisory and disciplinary actions as necessary.

* Monitor and evaluate all participants in the program and incorporate Caltrans Title 8 safety manuals.

* Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

* Operational characteristics, services, and activities associated with the Caltrans project, including highway maintenance, reentry principles and practices, and working with and supervising individuals recently released from incarceration.

* Working with diverse populations.

* Safety practices pertaining to environment of work.

* Principles of transitional training programs, and performance evaluation.

* Principles of work planning, safety awareness, problem resolution, public relations and documentation of required tasks.

* Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

* Principles and practices used to establish and maintain files and information retrieval systems.

* Principles and techniques used in public relations and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

* Pertinent and applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, rules and regulations, specifically those associated with operating commercial vehicles while towing a trailer, occupational safety, and employment.

* Basic landscaping, construction, and highway maintenance operations and procedures.

* Basic warehousing principles.

* English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.

* Oral and written communication skills.

Ability to:

* Oversee, direct, and coordinate work crew daily tasks.

* Perform safety and maintenance inspections of commercial vehicles.

* Operate and control equipment.

* Ability to work in strenuous terrain such as: incline hills, decline hills, loose and rocky gravel, ditches, terrain with holes created by animals, weather, or other unforeseen things.

* Plan and organize work to meet the priorities and deadlines established.

* Communicate verbally effectively in stressful/strenuous situations (e.g., emergency situations, disgruntled participants, interactions with partners, etc.)

* React quickly in unsafe situations to ensure well-being of self, co-workers, and the public.

* Prepare and present comprehensive, concise, clear oral and written reports.

* Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.

* Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and personnel, including those with physical or learning disabilities.

* Use various hand tools (e.g., picks, hoes, rakes, hoses, flag standard, cones, shovels) under various work/weather conditions to ensure successful completion of work activities.

* Stand, walk or sit for long periods of time following proper safety procedures to ensure successful completion of work activities.

* Work in extreme weather conditions to ensure the successful completion of work tasks.

* Demonstrate professionalism, fairness and honesty in all aspects of the performance of duties.

* Provide leadership based on ethics and principals as they relate to teamwork and collaborative functions.

Education and Experience Guidelines:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

* High School diploma or GED equivalency.

Experience:

* Two (2) years of combined experience in construction, landscaping, highway maintenance, and/or warehouse operations.

License or Certificates:

* Possession of valid Class B and C driver's license.

Desired License or Certificates:

* OSHA 10 Safety Certification

* Forklift Operation Certification (pallet jack, stand-up, reach, and/or sit-down)

* CPR First Aid Certification

Preferred Experience:

* Working experience with the parolee population.
