for fulfillment and continuing contribution during the later stages of life. The Kendal System uses a federal-type model that seeks to obtain the best of two worlds: sensitivity to local circumstances with most decision-making at a local level, and a capacity to gain benefits of being part of a larger system. Oversight of each Kendal organization is provided by a local board of directors. Residents and community members serve together on each of those boards and the President of each resident association attends those respective board meetings. Said another way, governance of each Kendal organization is not in some corporate office removed from the people being served. Residents are informed about financial and other matters in which they have important interest. Assets are kept within local Kendal organizations throughout the Kendal System and not put at risk to fund new developments in other places. That model has been built and refined over time, with the participation and care of the leadership of all of the organizations in the Kendal System.
