SunGas engineers and supplies technology and associated services for the production low-carbon energy and chemicals. In addition, SunGas works with exceptional partners to develop, build, own, and operate renewable energy projects utilizing SunGas’ technology.

This position offers an opportunity for an experienced, collaborative, and service-oriented individual to be part of the core business development team at SunGas and help drive the next phase of our growth by building our client base and opportunities. The successful candidate will have experience in the fuels industry, working understanding of project development, engineering and technical acumen, a commercial mindset to effectively structure, negotiate, identify and resolve issues, skills in cross functional strategic collaboration , be a clear communicator both written and oral, be responsive in a fast paced environment, be willing to mentor and invest in cultivating and supporting junior staff, present a positive attitude, be motivated and purposeful, have an understanding of how financing contract terms influence economics, and prioritize attention to detail. Advanced Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and computer skills required. The position reports to the SunGas Vice President of Business Development.

Work Location

This is a full-time position located in the SunGas offices Monday through Friday. SunGas is located near Fallbrook and W. Sam Houston Parkway N. in Houston. Extended or hybrid remote work options are not available for this position, however we do offer the flexibility to work outside of the office on occasion when necessary.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Find and nurturing client relationships through their project development process culminating in the technology and equipment sale.
  • Increase sales of SunGas licensed renewable energy technology and proprietary equipment products such as the System 1000.
  • Lead the Client relationship, develop proposals and oversee Client needs related to SunGas supplied technology studies and required engineering for each stage of the Client’s development process - typically following industry norms such as FEL1, FEL2, FEL3 through Final Investment Decision.
  • Use client feedback to assess and identify areas to improve the SunGas products including the System 1000, engineering studies, Technology Engineering Packages, and the licensed technology and equipment package.
  • Develop strong internal SunGas working relationships with Engineering and Technology Functions to improve and enhance the product offering and engineering deliverables. 
  • Develop and communicate BD strategy, objectives, and implementation to internal stakeholders and executive leadership.
  • Represents the Company at industry conferences and memberships in trade organizations to advance SunGas as a thought leader in the industry and identify business opportunities.
  • Supports client technical due diligence, marketing and data development for new business opportunities and negotiates agreements and terms and conditions for business interactions.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge and domain expertise in the market and regulatory landscape for the areas of business interest to SunGas such as renewable biofuels, renewable chemicals, renewable and sustainable feedstock, and regulations affecting these markets.
  • Develop partnerships with organizations and suppliers that enhance and enable SunGas’ business strategy including technology providers, industrial off takers, development partners, and industry groups.
  • Maintains a high level of knowledge and market intelligence of the competitive landscape and provide feedback into SunGas product development planning and ongoing programs.
  • Develop working relationships with SunGas commercial operations, business analysis and senior leadership to support evaluating company and technology positioning inclusive of new growth areas.
  • Applies strong leadership skills to organize cross-functional teams for project development.
  • Identifies new growth opportunities for the company and forms strategic partnerships to advance the company.
  • Assist or lead development of a consistent marketing strategy with supporting materials including but not limited to flyers, videos, ads, editorials, and contributions to industry publications and on-line platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Our ideal candidate will have the knowledge, skills, and education defined below; however, we understand that valuable experience may come in non-traditional forms.   • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of work experience in an energy, fuels, engineering, or energy services capacity with roles in business development, technology licensing, product development, engineering execution, or similar.
  • Experience leading and supporting professionals directly or indirectly, both in an administrative capacity (i.e., performance reviews, career development) and in a mentoring capacity (skills development, supporting direct reports to achieve enterprise goals).
  • Ability to travel 30% of time, including 15% international travel.
  • Fuels Industry Acumen and Track Record: Demonstrated understanding of refining, fuels, biofuels, and renewable energy markets. Tangible experience with synthetic gas, thermal conversion processes, transportation fuels, methanol, hydrogen, gas infrastructure or directly applicable technology is a primary expectation.
  • Development Acumen: Good business acumen with excellent communication and collaboration skills 
  • Engineering and Technical Acumen: Capable of understanding technical concepts and communication of the concepts in business settings. Good understanding of basic engineering principles, facility operations and experience in gasification technology is a plus. Working understanding of the project development process including Front End Engineering levels financing, construction, and operations.
  • Commercial Mindset– Experience with supporting complex commercial transactions and supporting the Client relationship during commercial contracts negotiations.
  • Teamwork–Problem solver and consensus builder capable of cross-functional collaboration across various departments and colleagues.
  • Communication– Clear, persuasive written and oral communications skills. Will be called upon to present at technical and Industry conferences, to Senior Management, and external stakeholders. Present positions persuasively and move to conclusions.
  • Mentorship– Investment in cultivating and supporting junior staff. Serving as an empathetic mentor and as someone who can proactively identify potential issues.
  • Responsiveness– SunGas runs at a fast clip where responsiveness is important and where one can manage several high impact activities at the same time. Ability to coordinate and work as a team as well as to contribute individually.

  • Financial Acumen– Demonstrated understanding of how financing contract terms and conditions influence economics and SunGas’ business model. Track record of successful commercial transactions.
