SunGas Renewables is Hiring a Manager Commercial Contracts Near Houston, TX

General Summary

SunGas Renewables Inc. (SunGas) (www.sungasrenewables.com), a growing renewable energy technology company formed by GTI (www.gti.energy) in 2019 is growing its commercial team. SunGas engineers and supplies commercial gasification technology and associated services, based its bubbling fluidized bed gasifier and other key ancillary supporting technologies to produce syngas for low-carbon energy, fuels, and chemicals. In addition, SunGas works with exceptional partners to develop, build, own, and operate renewable energy projects utilizing SunGas’ technology.

This exciting position offers an opportunity for a skilled, experienced, collaborative, and driven individual to be part of SunGas’ the team as it ramps up its licensed technology and equipment sales business and project development activities. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills – especially writing, experience in equipment and engineering sales contracts in a commercial supply chain environment and possess excellent customer service and vendor skills. This is a dynamic position, requiring adaptability in a rapidly changing and sometimes ambiguous startup environment. The position reports to the SVP Corporate Operations.

Work Location

This is a full-time position located in the SunGas offices Monday through Friday. SunGas is located near Fallbrook and W. Sam Houston Parkway N. in Houston. Extended or hybrid remote work options are not available for this position, however we do offer the flexibility to work outside of the office on occasion when necessary.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or support commercial contract negotiations related to the SunGas business lines of (i) Asset Development - developing large scale renewable energy assets located in Northa America, such as our Beaver Lake Renewable Energy “green methanol” development in central Louisiana, that utilizes SunGas technology to produce renewable biofuels and (ii) Technology and Equipment Sales - licensing SunGas technology with sales of syngas production equipment and associated technical services to third party customers.
  • Working with support of SunGas financial, asset development, engineering, and technology teams to lead negotiations of a wide range of agreements related to biomass feedstock supply, biofuel product sales to the shipping industry and to other consumers, power purchase, rail, truck, and barge freight transportation, third party technology licenses and EPC contracts.
  • Oversee development of procurement contracts for sales of SunGas’ proprietary S1000/S350 syngas generation process, equipment, and services.
  • Support the SVP Corporate Operations in the commercial planning, coordination, execution, and management of our supply chain in conjunction with our technical teams, and an ability to work with engineers on specifications for deliverables.
  • Negotiate with suppliers and collaborate with internal stakeholders to negotiate and execute contracts, resolve contract language issues, performance problems, warranty disputes, and claims.
  • Communicate and negotiate with internal and external partners.
  • Contribute to the reduction of external spend via competitive bidding, providing a reliable supplier base and market intelligence. Qualify new suppliers using audits, financial health checks and other measurements. Take an active leadership role in the supplier relationship management process to ensure adherence to contract terms, conditions, schedule, quality, safety, deliverables, etc.
  • Support the SVP Corporate Operations in the tracking and management of SunGas contracts and obligations.

Required Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Passion for bringing renewable energy technology to market and for making a personal contribution to the dynamic global energy transition.
  • Broad and full cycle commercial contract experience.
  • Ability to identify, establish and maintain strategic and tactical partnerships with vendors and clients.
  • Ability to strategically analyze processes for improvement of systems in place and communicate recommendations clearly to stakeholders.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and rapid change, while fulfilling customer deliverables and maintaining organization.
  • Ability to operate both vertically from task execution to big picture, and horizontally between technical, business and markets.
  • Ability to work independently and do what is necessary for successful completion of all deliverables.
  • Collaborative and innovative, with ability to resolve conflict.
  • Excellent negotiation, verbal, and written communication skills. Must be fluent in spoken and written English. 
  • Desire and ability to expand skills into new areas as needed to assist SVP Corporate Operations as this position grows within the organization.

Education and Experience Desired

Successful candidates may come from a variety of professional backgrounds. Those with strong commercial procurement and contracts background preferred. 

  • 10 years’ commercial procurement experience desired, with direct commercial and contract development responsibilities related to renewable energy, oil and gas or chemicals asset development and contracts.
  • Some background with EPC contracts, technology licensing and engineered equipment sales is a plus.
  • Degree in engineering, with MBA or law degree a plus and extensive business background,
  • Technical sales, marketing and/or finance in the field of process technology or engineered equipment a plus.
