In your role as an engineer at Horizon Surgical Systems, you will design components and systems (hardware and software) as part of a complete product subjected to FDA regulations. Your design will be subject to safety and efficacy requirements

The level of title will be determined case by case, based on the candidate's qualifications and years of experience: senior engineer, staff engineer, principal engineer or higher.

Required Qualifications and Abilities:

  • Educational Background:
    • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Engineering (Biomedical, Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics, or related field).
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong understanding of robotic systems and their components, including sensors, actuators, and controls systems.
    • Strong understanding of various calibration and characterization methods for robotic manipulators, haptic devices, and servo motors.
    • Proficient in data analysis and statistical tools (e.g., MATLAB, and Python).
    • Knowledge of medical device regulations and standards related to calibration and performance verification.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a cross-functional team environment.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in calibration and characterization role of complex robotics systems involving robotic manipulators, haptic devices, and servo motors, with preferably 3 years in the medical robotics industry.
    • Experience in developing safety-critical systems is a plus.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers as well as end-users.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Develop, implement, and maintain procedures for calibrating and verifying the performance and accuracy of the robotic system and its submodules. This includes software, hardware, and mechanical components.
    • Conduct in-depth characterization studies to understand system behaviors under various conditions. Develop models to predict performance and identify areas for improvement.
    • Analyze data collected from tests and use statistical tools to report on system performance. Provide insights and recommendations for enhancements.
    • Work closely with R&D, software, mechanical, and electrical engineering teams to ensure system components are calibrated and characterized accurately. Participate in the development and improvement of systems from a calibration and characterization perspective.
    • Ensure all calibration and characterization activities comply with relevant medical device regulations and standards. Participate in audits and regulatory submissions as required.
    • Develop and maintain specialized tools and methodologies for efficient calibration and characterization. Ensure tools and procedures are up to date with technological advancements.
    • Serve as an expert in troubleshooting system issues related to calibration and characterization. Provide technical guidance and solutions to complex problems.
    • Develop comprehensive documentation for calibration and characterization processes. Train technical staff and engineers on procedures and best practices.
