Description

The Mediation Advocate, LGBTQI Diversion (Mediation Advocate) empowers individuals and families in the LGBTQI community who are facing homelessness or housing insecurity so they can chart their own path back to or remain in stable housing. The Mediation Advocate also provides support as needed to assist with implementing their plan.

The Diversion Advocate's role supports persons who are newly homeless or housing insecure by helping to identify and implement strategies that will prevent them from entering or re-entering the shelter system. And if the client cannot immediately avoid a shelter stay, the Diversion Advocate supports them in exploring other options to prevent a longer stay in shelter. The Diversion Advocate will use an empowerment approach based on conflict theory to bolster the person’s own ability to think for themselves, weigh and consider options, advocate for their own needs and ultimately act on their own behalf. 

Commitment and ability to engage in an empathetic, non-judgmental way with people in stressful situations – to establish rapport in order to help them resolve their immediate housing crisis and commitment to treating people in the LGBTQI community and all others with dignity and respect.

This is a non-exempt, union position with a minimum-starting wage of $20.00 per hour

Schedule: Monday, 10am to 6pm, Tuesday - Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm. Schedule is in-person on Mondays and Thursdays and the option of virtual work on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University in Communications, Conflict Resolution, Mediation or a related field. Prior work and knowledge in mediation and/or conflict resolution.
