Whom We Seek

The General Ledger Accountant is a robust position charged with accounting for all aspects of RPA’s general ledger which includes, but is not limited to, contributions, grants in, grants out and payroll accounting to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and RPA and/or donor/sponsor policies. In addition, the General Ledger Accountant will be a proactive partner with our program staff, taking ownership of the accounting, identifying, and understanding of our projects’ grantmaking procedures and revenue streams. This position serves as a member of RPA’s Finance team, participating in meeting the financial, accounting and reporting responsibilities of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

Primary Responsibilities

The responsibilities include:

General Accounting and Reporting

  • Review assigned areas of general ledger activity including revenue and expenses, and the maintenance of various supporting schedules and analysis.
  • Review grants out agreements and grant records for payment processing for charitable giving funds and fiscal sponsorship
  • Assist with payroll accounting for RPA and its clients
  • Maintain employee database; create new employee profiles and update existing profiles with proper allocations as needed for payroll ledger detail
  • Assist in performing monthly financial analysis of balance sheet accounts, such as prepaid, accruals and fixed asset accounts.
  • Ensure proper reconciliation and use of Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Grants Payable and Fixed Asset sub-ledgers
  • Maintain donor database; enter all contributions and grants in revenue as required.
  • Assist with generating management, budget, and other internal financial reports
  • Review Grant (in) agreements to identify proper classification of grant revenue and deferred grant revenue, review contribution letters for proper classification of unrestricted and restricted contribution revenue.
  • Assist with the issuance of donor acknowledgement letters.
  • Assist in creating and entering RPA and project invoices into the Accounts Receivable sub-ledger as well as processing cash receipts related to invoices and other income.
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual financial statements and provide supporting schedules and assistance for annual audit.

Financial System - Controls, Compliances and External Reporting

  • Responsible for assuring the integrity, accuracy, and functionality of the financial reports and procedures as it relates to accounts payable, grants payable, revenue, payroll accounting and fixed assets.
  • Assist with unclaimed checks and payment reporting as required
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual tax return (Form 990) as required.

Other Financial Support Services

  • Cross train with other team members and act as the primary backup for Senior Accountants as required.
  • Assists other staff members on an ad hoc basis during peak seasons and perform other duties as required for all audits.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of our finance policy and procedure manuals.
  • Undertake various projects as assigned.
  • Support a portfolio of Sponsored Projects under RPA’s fiscal sponsorship, including the requirements of project staff, and manage some projects that do not require staffing

Desired Qualifications
Education: Minimum B.S./B.A. Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.

Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of related experience with significant responsibility.
Skills and Knowledge:

  • A successful applicant must have sound knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and non-profit specific accounting procedures.
  • Successful in working independently.
  • Must have ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously and meet deadlines; able to make materiality judgments and propose financial recommendations. Know when to act and when to ask for help
  • Strong financial analysis skills.
  • Very strong computer skills, including solid experience in accounting packages and the Microsoft Office suite of products (particularly Outlook and Excel).
  • Ability to work well with other staff members and with external contacts at all levels including independent accountants, vendors, financial institutions, etc.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Curious individual and strong desire to solve problems
  • Flexible and approachable style. Able to adjust to shifting priorities
  • Strong commitment to client service.

Travel Requirements

  • Must be willing to travel for client work as needed

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Range: $58,300.00 - $72,000.00 salary per year. The range listed is one component of the total compensation package for employees.
