The Maryland Food Bank (MFB) is a nonprofit hunger-relief organization dedicated to feeding people, strengthening communities, and ending hunger for more Marylanders by partnering with local organizations from the western mountains to the Eastern Shore. The food bank’s statewide network of food assistance brings enough resources together to provide more than 111,000 meals every day (over 40 million meals annually) to hungry children, seniors, veterans, and hard-working families, meeting the immediate needs of hungry Marylanders while simultaneously working to create pathways out of hunger. Overall purpose of the position: Under the direction of the Lead Transportation Supervisor, this employee is responsible for all facets of the MFB Transportation department, including managing and directing the effective use of the Transportation Management routing system (Descartes). Responsible for oversight of all route assignment & management activity for the Food Bank’s Central & Western branch transportation operations and support of Eastern branch operations. Works with Partner Logistics & MFB Agency Partners, Warehouse, Operations, Sourcing, Programs, other MFB teams, and Suppliers. Responsible for Fleet Maintenance documentation for all transportation assets and related costs. Supports the Lead Transportation Supervisor and Transportation Manager in training all Drivers, and holding them responsible for all Transportation and Maryland Food Bank standards and protocols.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities 40% Operational:
  • Coordinates with Warehouse, Partner Logistics, and Inventory teams on the flow of transportation & related information regarding deliveries, shuttles, pickups, and other programs
  • Fleet maintenance costs, operation, and administration
  • Assist in loading vehicles and warehouse operations as assigned
  • Handles incoming pick-up requests, directs drivers, and resolves delivery or rescheduling issues. Interacts with MFB partners which will require customer service skills.
  • Required to drive routes in a commercial vehicle, [CDL required] participate in all Transportation activities, and act in support of all MFB activities
  • Optimize fleet use and driver activity on an ongoing basis.
  • Required to drive routes participate in all Transportation activities and act in support of all MFB activities
20% Staff Management :
  • Monitors daily staff hours and other payroll functions as assigned
  • Manage all aspects of driver and loader daily activities and participate in training & onboarding
40% Administrative :
  • Route Management - Dispatch multiple vehicles to accomplish scheduled deliveries on time, and with accuracy. Uses proprietary software [Descartes and WMS]
  • Track driver activity and route performanceCoordinate truck routing, and prepare, update, manage, and publish daily route schedule
  • Track fleet use on an ongoing basis. Maintain and document pallet counts, trip sheets, and manifests. Completing driver delivery packets and placing them in the designated area in the warehouse.
  • To add, update, or correct delivery information
  • Manage driver reporting & delivery documentation
Supervisory Responsibility: This position supervises assigned Transportation Drivers and their use of MFB vehicles & equipment.
In the absence of the Lead Supervisor or Transportation Manager, oversee all MFB Transportation staff to ensure deliveries are on time.
Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent required. At least 5 years experience supervising commercial deliveries including fleet management activities. 2 years experience using Routing and Fleet systems. A valid CDL driver’s license is required [preference is an “A” license] as well as an MVR showing no prior DUI/DWI’s and fewer than 2 points against the license. Ability to conduct daily administrative tasks.
Essential Working Conditions Work Environment: The employee will carry out some of the job duties from a warehouse environment with fluctuation in temperatures and potential for loud noise and will carry out the rest of the job duties either inside a truck or outdoors at client sites. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds.
