Job Summary: | Advanced technical and specialized electronics technology work in support of a complex range of electronics systems ranging from legacy instruments to modern, highly sophisticated tools. The work involves complex maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and design work including the development of equipment modifications in response to the specialized needs of various experiments. Also included are the selection, design, fabrication, construction, calibration, maintenance, and modification of electronic devices and systems. The work involves designing and fabricating special purpose subsystems such as data acquisition modules, controllers, and electronic interfaces; the diagnosis and analysis of problem areas; maintaining sophisticated laboratory equipment including various spectrometers and other measuring and metering instruments with their associated display equipment. The individual will be responsible for component-level repair of instrumentation and purchase parts as needed for repairs. They must work closely with Department Heads of Chemistry, Physics, and Geology, as well a faculty, staff and students in those departments. This position requires some heavy lifting of instrumentation during repair/maintenance or moving, and involves occasional exposure to laboratory instrumentation, environments and chemicals. |

Position Qualifications: | Required Qualifications: Must be experienced with modern electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital voltmeters, circuit testing equipment, etc. Must have an eye for detail and establish and implement a preventative maintenance program. Must diagnose, confer with instrument manufacturers, and make repairs on scientific instrumentation at the component level. Experience with soldering/desoldering components and repairing printed circuit boards. The types of instrumentation includes the following in both teaching and research settings: nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers (NMR), spectrophotometers, centrifuges, calorimeters, gravimetric analyzers, chemical balances, electroanalytical instrumentation, mass spectrometers, liquid and gas chromatographs, atomic absorption and emission spectrometers, particle sizer, titrators. Individual must interact with faculty, staff and students in an interdisciplinary setting for the departments of Chemistry, Physics and Geology. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field. |
