Job Title: Literacy SpecialistLocation: Assigned School Job Group: Educator Pay Level: Exempt Reports to: PrincipalSummary: Responsible for creating and providing grade appropriate, targeted-intervention programs in literacy that will help learners reach grade level expectations by both push-in and pull-out strategies. Consults with classroom teachers, as appropriate, and provides direct instruction to students. Maintains effective relationships with students, staff, and administrators to enhance learning opportunities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.) Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Adapts the curriculum to the needs of each student and provides individualized and small group instruction. Assesses and monitors student learning using a variety of methods. Adjusts instruction accordingly to individual student needs. Establishes and maintains a positive learning environment based on explicit group norms and strong routines for collaboration.Evaluates students' academic and social growth, and documents evidence of new learning.Identifies student needs and develops strategies for re-teaching and additional support. Collaborates with EST Coordinator, classroom teachers, special educators, and instructional support staff in order to provide layered support for students.Provides direct instruction in metacognitive skills and self-regulation techniques. Cultivates productive learning dispositions in order to improve students’ academic outcomes.General Responsibilities: Monitors student discipline through an appropriate classroom management program. Maintains regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule and expectations. Demonstrates ongoing commitment to the District Ends, equity, and inclusion.Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. One or more years teaching experience with the assigned age group is preferred.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Vermont Teaching License with appropriate endorsements for grade level and subject matter such as in English Language Arts and/or reading Instruction. Training/certification in Orton Gillingham Approach is preferred. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret textbooks, periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Skilled in oral and written communication for clear, high-quality lesson plans, reports, correspondence, and procedures, as well as the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students and colleagues in various settings, such as one-on-one, small groups, or large groups. Ability to use a variety of assessments for student work and provide clear reports of student progress. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to source and apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school and district objectives and the needs and abilities of assigned students. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students and colleagues. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, relevant educational rules, and Board policies. Must be able to keep high levels of confidentiality in all aspects of job duties.
