Job Title: High School CounselorLocation: South Burlington High SchoolJob Group: EducatorsPay Level: ExemptReports to: Director of GuidanceSummary: Strengthens and facilitates the educational process by actively participating in the development andimplementation of a comprehensive and developmental counseling program addressing the academic,personal/social development, and career/post-secondary needs of the 9-12 population. Provides individual supportto maximize student potential and academic achievement.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:1. Designs, implements, and evaluates a standards-based developmental guidance program to help all students:a. Gain self-understanding, self-advocacy, personal competence, and behavioral change as it relates toschool adjustment, academic performance, and the ability to make healthy and informed choices.b. Foster a constructive and respectful climate within the school, develop productive and satisfyingrelationships, and to effectively resolve conflicts.c. Explore current academic and future career and higher education opportunities and develop greaterdecision-making and planning skills.2. Identifies, in collaboration with administration, staff, students, and parents, concerns that may interfere with thelearning and healthy development of students that may require intervention, counseling, and/or support.a. Develops relationships with students, staff, families, and community resources and serves as a liaison withteachers, parents, staff, and community resources to facilitate student success.b. Works with all students and families in ways that respect diverse backgrounds (e.g.: cultural, socioeconomic, gender, sexual orientation, learning styles) and interests.c. Participates on a variety of teams and participates in a comprehensive program designed to meet thedevelopmental needs of individual students.d. Observes and evaluates student performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.e. Provides crisis intervention and short-term counseling to individuals and groups of students to assist inmanaging personal, social, developmental, and educational issues. Makes referrals to other professionalsas appropriate.f. Assists with the interpretation of psychological and educational assessments for students and parents as itrelates to personal, educational, social, and career decisions.g. Provides individual, small- or large-group instruction on adolescent development issues, communityresources, educational opportunities, or student related matters.3. Provides operational support through the following functions:a. Supports the registration, orientation, and transition of students entering and leaving the District.b. Coordinates with administrative team in the development of emergency crisis interventions. Uses deescalation techniques with students in danger of hurting themselves or others.c. Maintains appropriate, accurate, and complete student records as required by law, district policy, andadministrative regulations.d. Provides training on related topics as requested.4. Remains current on career-related subject matter by:a. Attending professional meetings and conferences related to student learning and development issues andrelated subject matter.b. Reading professional literature and other sources to maintain a high level of expertise and recommendapplications, enhancements, and solutions as appropriate.5. May perform other responsibilities as assigned.General Responsibilities: Assists with student behavior management by supporting the established school-baseddiscipline and encouraging staff and students to foster a positive learning environment. Regular attendance inaccordance with established work schedule. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace diversity,sustainability, and delivering exceptional customer service.Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essentialduty satisfactorily. Ability to write reports, recommendation letters, andcorrespondence and effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents, staff. and thegreater school community is essential.General Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with general mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts suchas percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.General Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where limitedstandardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduleform.Other Skills and Abilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate a highdegree of interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, and adaptability. Ability to apply knowledge ofcurrent research and theory specific to assigned program. Demonstrated skill in decision making, negotiations,organization, and planning are required. Ability to work with standardized testing results and to interpret results tostudents and parents. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board policies.Physical Demands The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee tosuccessfully perform the essential functions of this job.
