You Can Vote is seeking a part-time Communications Assistant based in the Triangle to work ~20 hours per week in 2024. This position is a temporary contract role starting in May 2024 and continuing through November. The Communications Assistant will be paid hourly at a rate of $20-$25/hour, depending on experience. 

This position is perfect for a recent graduate, current grad student, or marketing/communications professional interested in part-time work to support voter empowerment in NC. The position will be based out of our headquarters in Durham and will require some travel to visit and document events throughout the state. Candidates must have a valid NC drivers license and reliable transportation. 

You Can Vote (YCV) is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that educates, registers, and empowers voters across the state of NC. We operate state-wide and are headquartered in Durham. 

Responsibilities

The Communications Assistant will be supervised by the Development & Communications Director and will work closely with the Communications Manager. Responsibilities will include:

• Collaborating with YCV Leadership and the Communications Team on content strategy and campaigns. 
• Traveling to YCV events in the Triangle area and across the state to take photos/videos, interview YCV field staff/volunteers/partners, and create content. 
• Training YCV staff, volunteers, and student fellows on communications best practices.
• Working closely with the Communications Manager to create content for YCV’s social media accounts, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and more. 
• Collaborating with the Communications Manager and Development and Communications Director on other Communications projects as needed. 
• Assisting with YCV events as needed while upholding YCV’s strict nonpartisanship and quality control standards. 

Skills & Experience

YCV is looking for tech savvy self-starters with at least 1 year of experience in communications, marketing, video production/editing, or graphic design. All You Can Vote staff must be willing to learn and comply with all non-partisan voter registration laws. 

We are especially interested in candidates whose qualities include:

• Deep interest in social, economic and political justice in North Carolina
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Familiar with Google Drive, Canva, Adobe Suite, and video editing software
• Past experience managing a social media account for a business or organization
• Familiar with digital and social media marketing best practices for various platforms, including post specs, structure, and tagging systems
• Ability to adapt quickly, take constructive criticism, follow YCV’s brand guidelines, pay attention to detail, and maintain nonpartisanship
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and exercise good judgment
• Dual language skills a plus, especially Spanish
