The County of Yolo is recruiting for one regular, full-time position in the class of Secretary I or II at the Public Defender's Office. The selected candidate will be placed at either the I or II level depending on their qualifications and experience. The salary range for each classification level is as follows:
Secretary I: $43,180.80 - $52,478.40 Annually
Secretary II: $45,968.00 - $55,868.80 Annually
The Position
The ideal candidate for this position will have had previous clerical or secretarial experience in a law enforcement or legal department within a local government agency or the court system. The ideal candidate would additionally be able to work in a fast paced environment, possess exceptional organization and customer service skills, be comfortable serving a diverse clientele, and be committed to the mission of the Public Defender’s Office.
Under supervision, to perform secretarial duties of routine difficulty; to transcribe material from a mechanical source or by the use of shorthand; and to do other duties which pertain to this class specification; and to perform other related duties as required.
Is the first working level class in the secretarial series, where incumbents have at least one year of secretarial or stenographic experience. Incumbents in the class are required to perform basic secretarial duties, which may include the use of electronic text editing equipment, with only general supervision. Incumbents in this class are required to take dictations on a regular basis, either from a mechanical source or with the use of shorthand. In some department’s incumbents may have significant word processing responsibilities.

Employment Standards
Minimum Qualifications
Secretary I
Experience: One year of secretarial, stenographic, or journey level clerical experience.
Secretary II
Experience: Two years of secretarial, stenographic, or journey level clerical experience; or one year in the class of Secretary I in Yolo County.
Education: One year of business education above the high school level may be substituted for one year of experience.
Knowledge of: general knowledge of business letter writing and modern office methods and procedures; modern office methods and equipment which may include data and word processor, computer terminal and/or transcription equipment.
Ability to: acquire a knowledge of procedures, methods and terminology as required for a specific department; perform varied clerical work of average difficulty; understand and follow oral and written instructions; operate a variety of office equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships and to deal effectively and courteously with the general public.
License: Some positions in this classification may require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties.
