Hours: Monday - Friday, 2:30 - 6:00PM

Operation Hero

Military life can be challenging for children as they move from duty station to duty station. One or both parents can be deployed for extended periods, creating an ever-changing family dynamic in many households. Children often feel isolated in new or even old surroundings. They may experience feelings of self-doubt or suffer from low self-esteem. This can lead to behavior problems, placing their academic engagement and performance in jeopardy. Operation Hero is an intervention program designed to put these children back on track. School personnel and/or the child’s parents refer the child to the program. When children enroll in Operation Hero, they work within a team to navigate the 10-week course. The Operation Hero facilitator leads the children in group discussions about who they are and how they fit in at home and school. They discuss how to manage feelings, friendships, and conflict. The sessions also include a period of homework assistance in areas identified by their classroom teacher, snack time, and an activity supporting the theme of the week.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise and implement the Operation Hero tutorial and counseling program.
  • Provide assistance and maintain regular communication with the Program Coordinator.
  • Give leadership, direction, and supervision to assigned volunteers; maintain an open, friendly, professional relationship with staff, parents, volunteers and participants; treat everyone with dignity and respect, and allow for individual differences.
  • Review and be familiar with weekly lesson plans prior to implementation.
  • Maintain an organized, safe and clean program space. Maintain program supplies.
  • Complete all required documentation, to include, not be limited to: attendance reports, weekly reports, supply requests, accident/incident reports, behavior log reports, and lesson plans.
  • Respond to all suggestions/complaints in writing within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Distribute and collect all participant/parent/counselor questionnaires/surveys.
  • Must attend all staff meetings and in-service training programs.
  •  May be required to work hours outside normal work schedule for training, extended program hours, or association events.
  • Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
  • Ensures the health and safety of all members/guests.
  • Inspect physical space to ensure the safety, orderliness, sanitation and cleanliness of facilities.
