About the Opportunity:

As the Director of Marketing and Communications, you’ll be the organization’s chief story teller, championing our brand, promoting our innovative live, digital and education programming, driving audience growth and engagement, and cultivating a passionate community of supporters, partners and fans. We're looking for a visionary, data-driven thinker with deep knowledge of diverse marketing channels and emerging technologies, and an eagerness to deploy these new tools and strategies to spark awareness and excitement about our work. You will help position the World Science Festival as a beacon of innovation, ensuring its message and programming reach ever-larger global audiences.

Responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive annual marketing plans that align with WSF’s strategic goals and drive measurable results, including the growth of global audiences across live events, streaming platforms, and social channels.
  • Craft compelling strategies and campaigns that highlight WSF's unique position at the intersection of science and the arts, emphasizing the WSF's dynamic blend of thought-leadership and creativity.
  • Lead with insight by analyzing campaign performance, platform metrics, and industry trends to continuously optimize messaging, audience targeting, and engagement strategies.

Brand Management and Campaigns:

  • Maintain the organization's brand identity across all platforms and channels, ensuring a consistent and compelling voice and look.
  • Secure media coverage, speaking opportunities, and influencer partnerships to amplify the WSFs reach and impact.
  • Drive creative direction for the development of high-quality marketing materials, including collateral, website content, digital assets, sponsorship decks and email campaigns.
  • Oversee all aspects of multi-channel campaigns, from conceptualization to launch and evaluation.

Digital Marketing Expertise:

  • Manage website development and ensure strong content strategies and SEO optimization.
  • Lead social media strategy with audience growth and engagement goals.
  • Spearhead email marketing efforts, including list segmentation and targeted campaigns.
  • Analyze and optimize partnership and distribution performance: Track key metrics such as reach, engagement, and conversions. Use data to refine strategies for enhanced results.

Team Management:

  • Build, lead and mentor a high-performing marketing and communications team, fostering a collaborative and results-oriented work environment.
  • Oversee budgeting and resource allocation for the marketing department.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Actively partner with internal teams (e.g., program development, fundraising, education, media and live event operations), to craft consistent messaging and achieve overarching organizational goals.
  • Collaborate to amplify content impact: Work closely with producers, designers, and other internal teams to optimize content for different platforms and audiences.

Media and Distribution partnership development:

  • Develop and execute strategic media partnerships: Identify, negotiate, and manage mutually beneficial partnerships with media outlets, content platforms, and influencers to amplify brand reach and messaging.
  • Drive content distribution across diverse channels: Oversee the distribution of marketing content through owned media (website, social media), earned media (PR, influencer outreach), and paid media (advertising).
  • Maintain industry knowledge: Stay informed on media trends, emerging content platforms, and best practices in partnership development and content distribution to ensure strategies remain cutting-edge.

The Successful Candidate will have:

  • Experience: Proven track record of success (ideally 7 years) in a senior marketing and communications leadership role. Experience in media and entertainment industries a plus.
  • Strategic Acumen: Demonstrated ability to think strategically, translate business goals into effective marketing plans, and align communications strategies to overall organizational objectives.
  • Data Fluency: Proficiency in marketing analytics, web analytics tools, and the ability to interpret data to make informed strategic decisions.
  • Digital Expertise: In-depth understanding of digital marketing channels, content marketing, social media best practices, and SEO/SEM.
  • Strong Communicator: Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with proven ability to communicate persuasively to various audiences.
  • Partnership Orientation: Track record of building and nurturing productive relationships with external stakeholders, media partners, and vendors.
  • Project Management: Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adjust to evolving marketing needs.
  • Leadership: Ability to inspire, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field. Advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) a plus

Additional Information:

The hiring salary range for this position is $140k to $175k annually. World Science Festival offers a comprehensive benefits package.

The World Science Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, doing business as the World Science Festival and is headquartered in New York City. This position is located in our New York office with the opportunity to work from home one day per week.
