DEPARTMENT: EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
REPORTS TO: Director of Marketing and Communications
SALARY RANGE: $90,000 - $102,960
FLSA: EXEMPT
Position Summary
The Deputy Director of Marketing and Communications (MarComms) - in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications, a Marketing Associate, and a Media Manager - will manage the storytelling, marketing, and communications needs for city- and state-wide programs that serve homeowners and support communities. The Deputy Director and team will also manage our internal communications needs for an organization of 100. This key organizational leader has an extraordinary opportunity to uplift and center the needs and voices of homeowners across New York State.
The Deputy Director and team will manage multiple marketing campaigns with 6-figure budgets, in addition to brands for the Center and related entities (e.g., Sustainable Neighborhoods, Interboro Community Land Trust), as well as programs (e.g., HomeFix, Homeowner Help Desk, Black Homeownership Project). Working with the Director, the Deputy Director will drive our ambitious re-branding project in 2024. They own and drive our storytelling strategy, in concert with partners in executive, fundraising, policy, partnerships, and beyond. Finally, as a leading voice on homeownership issues in NYC, they help expand and uplift our thought leadership and expert voices on relevant issues like homeownership policy, foreclosure, flip taxes, tax liens, wealth-building, and more.
Working with the CEO & CXO, the Director is responsible for raising the brand profile of the Center, helping shape the organization's reputation, and ensuring our work reaches homeowners in line with our strategic and programmatic priorities. This person will coordinate closely with all departments across the organization, notably with:
  • Policy & Public Affairs to elevate organizational positions and vision
  • Digital Products for alignment on digital sites and products
  • The Hub for outreach
Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute the Center's marketing and communications strategy across earned, owned, organic, and paid channels.
  • Collaborate with MarComms team and external creative agencies to develop integrated comms campaigns to launch and sustain current Center initiatives and new programs
  • Set strategic direction of digital and social media and our website, ensuring that together these assets accurately and compellingly communicate our story to our key audiences
  • Manage strategic direction for the evolution of the Center brand and narrative
  • Set and delegate communications strategy and budget for each Center program, collaborating with Directors and Deputies across the organization on alignment
  • Develop a strategy, with the Partnerships Working Group, that captures and raises the visibility of the work of network partners and supports their needs
  • Develop and execute all media relations in partnership with public relations partners
  • Position the Center and staff as experts in the fields of affordable housing and homeownership
Organizational Management & Leadership
  • Assist the Director in managing the the day-to-day responsibilities of the team, and ensure all projects are executed with excellence and creativity
  • As a member of the Center's Leadership Team, work with other organizational leaders to create a culture, internally and externally, that is collaborative, transparent, inclusive, and growth-oriented
  • Contribute to the development of the Center's brand, thought leadership, strategic planning, and values alignment as a senior leader in the organization
  • Collaborate in the identification and sourcing of Communications team members, including outsourced vendors, firms, and agencies, in partnership with staff members and in line with our organizational values
  • Collaborate with the Finance department to generate and manage the Communications budget
Marketing & Communications Strategy
  • Create a multi-segment communications and marketing strategy that conveys the story of the Center to homeowners, homebuyers, partners, funders, and other stakeholders
  • Create a media strategy with a focus on local and national press, to amplify the policy and research work of the Center, the storytelling of homeowners across New York State, and the thought leadership of the Center in the affordable homeownership space
  • Create digital and traditional marketing strategies that support programmatic deliverables
  • Develop and execute comprehensive communication and marketing strategies across all paid, earned, and owned channels including social, website, press, email communications, advertising, and more
  • Become a key player in the development or redesign of necessary branding tools and materials representing the organization

Skills & Qualifications
  • Clear and confident communicator, both written and orally
  • Proficiency in a wide range of both traditional and digital communications channels and strategies
  • Passion and commitment to a mission-oriented organization are required; knowledge of and experience in the affordable housing / affordable homeownership space preferred
  • Proficient user of relevant software/programs, including Adobe Suite, Canva, social media, etc. required; refined graphic design, photography, and data visualization skills preferred
  • Experience working and engaging with our core constituencies - historically underserved communities and homeowners across metropolitan areas like New York City and geographical areas like New York State
  • Strong project management skills
  • Problem-solver with good judgment and sharp analytical skills
  • Demonstrated experience managing a team and coordinating work streams cross-departmentally
  • Able to multitask and work efficiently to meet diverse organizational needs
  • High-level proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, Asana, and other standard office tools, or a willingness to become proficient within a relatively short period
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in communications, marketing, storytelling, public relations, journalism, or related field
