West Suburban YMCA is Hiring a Summer Day Camp Unit Director - Camp Pikati Near Newton, MA

We are hiring for Summer Day Camp Leadership Positions at Camp Pikati for the 2024 Summer season! Please apply here if you are interested in joining us as Day Camp Unit Directors/Unit Leaders for the 2024 Summer season.

Camp Pikati (pike-a-tee) means “camp across the Pike!” Each week campers have fun filling their days with traditional camp games, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, relay races, archery, and campwide special themes!

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Unit Leader supervises, leads and mentors an assigned age group of campers and the staff assigned to that unit. The Unit Leader provides a safe and nurturing environment for campers and staff and will be actively involved and have a positive attitude about all camp activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Actively participate in and lead portions of Staff Training.
  • Take responsibility for the welfare of each person in the unit and aid in solving all problems in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Inform the Head Counselor, Program Coordinator or Camp Director of any camper or staff problems, issues, or concerns.
  • Assist any campers or staff needing help with fitting into camp.
  • Ensure all staff are following and enforcing all rules as well as fulfilling all expectations and their assigned duties.
  • Keep in contact with parents and pass along messages to campers and staff as appropriate.
  • Correct and document, as necessary, situations that endanger the emotional or physical safety of any person.
  • Submit daily check-in to Camp Director regarding group issues.
  • Plan and lead activities.
  • Evaluate Junior Counselors and assist in evaluating Senior Counselors.
  • Act as a liaison between the Counselors and other administrative staff.
  • Spend any “free time” assisting counselors with their groups or participating in camper activities.
  • Be knowledgeable about the eating habits, diets, and health of campers and staff.
  • Instruct campers in emergency procedures including fire, weather, missing person and water safety.
  • Visit activities periods regularly as a supervisory tool and to get to know campers and staff.
  • Follow established health and safety standards of the YMCA, ACA, and Dept. of Public Health.
  • Actively participate in staff training, meetings, etc.
  • Participate in all programs, special events, family nights, overnights, Family day and other events.
  • Help with all camp activities and participate as a member of the camp staff team.
  • Demonstrate/teach the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to all campers and staff.
  • Follow all camp rules, regulations and policies and enforce them among peers.
  • Maintain positive public relations with parents, visitors, and the public at all times.
  • Able to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities visually and audibly.
  • Capable of responding appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring first aid and/or CPR.
  • Submit all required paperwork on time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 18 years old or having at least graduated high school.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate staff and campers.
  • Ability to handle assignments and follow through with minimal instruction and supervision.
  • Good role model, high integrity, and adaptable.
  • Positive attitude and desire to be part of a cohesive team.
  • Sound judgment, integrity, problem solving skills and risk management.
  • Human relation skills with general public and staff.
  • Strong understanding of characteristics and issues of specific age group.
  • Creative program planning and implementation.
  • Willingness to go above and beyond the written job description.
  • Committing to support and further our anti-racist work as an organization. Learning about our initiatives and the continuous work and being able to vocalize with members if needed.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Current First Aid and Adult and Child CPR certifications

Physical Demands:

  • Hear noises and work in fast paced environment that requires patience, focus and diligence.
  • Meet strength and lifting requirements of 25lbs.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
