Ropes Specialist/Camp Counselor for the 2024 Summer Season!

YMCA Camp Chickami is a traditional summer day camp located in Wayland, MA. Founded in 1955, Camp Chickami has inspired kids with countless opportunities to laugh, lead and make lasting friendships. We are looking for safety conscious, energetic individuals who assume responsibility to ensure the delivery of Outdoor Adventure based programs for youth, while managing the potential associated risks. In addition, candidates should have a strong facilitation and challenge course background and are comfortable and experienced in working with diverse groups of school-aged populations.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Counselor (Ropes Specialist) is responsible for the planning and implementation of all Outdoor Adventure programs at Camp Chickami. The Counselor (Ropes Specialist) is responsible for High Ropes, Low Ropes, and teambuilding programming that allow all campers to achieve goals as a group. This is a challenge by choice program that encourages children to challenge themselves in a way that makes them feel safe and in control.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Active support of our DEIB statement and putting into practice our commitment to equity, diversity, belonging and inclusion. Continue to think about strategies to support diversity goals of the organization.
  • Maintain safety standards and procedures in the field and be accountable for the assigned equipment care and use
  • Facilitate ice breakers, initiatives and reflection for a variety of groups including youth students, campers, and adults
  • Maintain course and equipment according to Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) standards
  • Monitor safety procedures for both high and low elements of the challenge course program according to ACCT, ACA and Dept. of Public Health standards
  • Update and maintain applicable documentation and records as required (SOPs, LOPs, Rope Use Logs, Equipment Logs, Maintenance Logs, Belay Certification Logs, Daily Inspection Logs, Equipment Inventory Sheets, etc.)
  • Be continually conscious of safety concerns and follow and enforce safety guidelines at all times ensuring a safe environment, both physically and emotionally, for all participants and staff
  • Keep up to date on relevant laws, regulations, operating standards and industry practices
  • Responsible for daily set-up and take down of elements when courses are scheduled for use
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures
  • Actively participate and complete all staff meetings and training as scheduled
  • Have an appreciation for the outdoors
  • Help with all camp activities and participate as a member of the camp staff team
  • Demonstrate/teach the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to all campers and staff.
  • Follow all camp rules, regulations and policies and enforce them among peers.
  • Maintain positive public relations with families, visitors, and the general public at all times.
  • Able to visually and audibly identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities.
  • Capable to respond appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring first aid and/or CPR.
  • Submit all required paperwork on time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven technical skills in the set-up and use of top rope belay systems in an outdoor setting
  • At least 18-years-old
  • Demonstrated experience administering risk management practices for adventure programs
  • Previous climbing wall and/or challenge course experience is preferred
  • Capable of responding to emergencies on a high or low ropes course, including performing/assisting in rescues
  • Capable of responding appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring first aid and/or CPR
  • Ability to handle assignments with minimal instruction and supervision
  • First Aid and CPR Certifications
  • Willingness to accept responsibilities and duties other than those assigned
  • Committing to support and further our anti-racist work as an organization. Learning about our initiatives and the continuous work and being able to vocalize with members if needed.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Physical Demands:

Lift 40 pounds using proper technique;

Must be able to climb safely using/demonstrating proper technique;

Must be able to belay a top rope climber safely using/demonstrating proper technique;

Able to visually and audibly identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities.
