Position Summary

In coordination with the Health Center Supervisor coordinates activities of office staff. Responsible for the implementation of policies and procedures for the Health Center. Keeps the physician(s) informed of both progress and potential problems. Ensures patient flow is smooth and Health Center supplies are at an adequate level.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum two years’ experience working as a Medical Assistant.
  • Excellent Organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the provision of services for the underserved and sensitivity working with a variety of people from low-income populations, with diverse educational, lifestyle, ethnic, and cultural origins; disabled, homeless, substance users, HIV (AIDS) infected, and/or physiologically impaired.
  • Medical Assistant training/certification preferred.
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with others in a team environment, respecting and valuing the perspectives and experiences of others.
  • Knowledge of community resources including Medicare, Medi-Cal, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and the county’s General Assistance Program.
  • Computer (PC) literate in Microsoft word, email and Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing and demonstrate a high level of listening skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service experience including active listening, problem solving, and the ability to remain calm in emotional or stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records.
  • Commitment to HIPAA and ability to abide by standards of professional ethics and maintain confidentiality.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to, standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking and social distancing.
  • Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Obtains, identifies and records robust vital signs, prevention data, medications, including performing medication reconciliation, chief complaints and other pertinent information following documentation standards and policies; observes, records and reports pertinent patient symptoms, reactions, condition changes, and information that is pertinent for the provider, immediately identifies and reports to the provider all adverse observations, reactions, conditions, in order to provide outstanding care maintaining communication with the care team and patient on real time.
  • Prepares room and instruments for use during exam or procedure; assists providers with wide variety of patient care procedures and tests; properly collects and labels specimens accurately as required by provider and in accordance with policies and procedures; performs point-of-care laboratory tests and tests quality controls per manufactures guides and current approved protocols. Maintains and verifies completion of lab binder logs, temperature logs, and sample medication logs and if applicable autoclave logs.
  • Maintains and promotes clean, safe, and well-equipped environment for patients, family members, and staff; follows departmental and organizational directives to isolate and process contaminated instruments and supplies; follows infection control policies and procedures as required.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Performs other duties as assigned within the medical assistant's scope of practice.
  • Maintains exam room supplies stocked and informs health center supervisor when supplies are running low.
  • Follows all Patient Centered Health Home (PCHH) processes which includes; National Patient Safety Goals; Robust chart prep; Attends, prepares and participates in daily huddles; Produces robust 30 second report for each patient; Does midway knock; Check out patients by scheduling follow up appointments as needed, give patient plan and provide education for patient and their family and confirms their understanding of provider instructions; Scrubs schedule; Confirmation calls. No show follow up process; Patient portal enrollments and manages patient portal messages; Proficient in the electronic medical record and other computer applications used by WellSpace Health required to perform all of the medical and administrative tasks of the job requirement.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment is characteristic of a medical clinic environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands and arms to reach. The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client’s use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care. The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
