Wayside Schools is an open-enrollment, tuition-free Pre-K4-12th grade public charter school network that provides over 2,000 scholars across its four South Austin campuses with a rigorous International Baccalaureate education. Job Goals:
The Transportation manager will oversee bus service moving scholars to and from school every day. Transportation Manager is responsible for the efficient management of day-to-day operations and will also analyze the trends of ridership, rider’s behavior, cost, and route efficiency. The goal is to achieve on-time and safe transportation service for scholars to and from school each day. The Transportation Manager will manage a fleet bus, bus drivers, and serve as a liaison for administrators and parents for any change. As a member of the operations team, the Transportation Manager is responsible for designing professional development trainings for bus drivers and managing the expectations of service are met during the school year. The Transportation Manager will also oversee a budget and ensure that the department stays within its limit.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution (preferred)
Experience:
- A minimum of 3 years supervisory experience in transportation and fleet operations (required)
- A minimum of 3-5-years of experience in operations or similar role in education or similar organization (preferred)
Requirements
- Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- Clear driving record
- In good standing with the Department of Transportation
- Annual physical exam
- Unannounced alcohol and drug tests

Performance Responsibilities:
- Designs professional development for bus drivers and bus coordinators, coordinates transportation training programs, and tracks participation
- Manages the development and implementation of policies and procedures, system upgrades, and standards of service expectations across the Network
- Monitors daily operations to assure bus service is performed efficiently and in accordance with appropriate regulations, standard operating procedures, policies, and guidelines
- Distributes bus schedules to schools prior to the start of the school year
- Facilitates staff meetings to address operational issues and builds a rapport of support for school administrators by addressing concerns in a timely manner
- Maintains strong communication with bus service contract providers and Wayside Schools teams to facilitate problem resolution in an efficient and effective manner
- Responds promptly to concerns or emergency notifications from parents, school leaders, teachers, and other faculty members
- Establishes and maintains positive relationships with parents, school and other support partners
- Provides recommendations to the Operations Manager during periods of inclement weather regarding schedule changes
- Oversees route efficiency and leads the planning for annual route optimization while complying with the district’s guidelines
- Travels throughout the Network for campus visits, rides bus routes, and visits bus stops to observe loading and drop-off procedures
- Manages transportation budget and ensures the department operates within its limit
- Meets regularly with Operations Manager and/or designee to provide information on operational issues, including changes in pupil transportation regulations and guidelines
- Serves as a liaison for field trip requests between schools and bus service provider to ensure service is scheduled
- Maps opportunities and implements plans to achieve continuous improvement in transportation with the goal of providing excellence in service
- Oversees and promotes the use of technology on buses to enhance best practices elevating bus service experience for scholars
- Plans for future bus service needs that are aligned to Wayside Schools improvement plans.
- Coordinate assignments and schedules of bus drivers, routes, and vehicles to ensure safe, efficient, and economical transportation services
- Ability to conduct on-site inspections of all vehicle repair and maintenance operations
- Ability to manage budget and personnel
- Manage the delivery of transportation services for students and ensure that they are picked up and arrive safely and on time
- Supervise preparation and updating of bus routes and schedules for all schools in district and develop plans to meet future transportation needs
- Communicate changes in routes and scheduling to campuses and the public when warranted
- Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs
- Assign bus drivers to routes and extracurricular trips and find substitutes as needed
- Supervise repair of all district-owned buses and preventive maintenance; ensure that vehicle repair requests and work orders are prioritized and processed in a timely manner; contract for outside services that cannot be performed in shop
- Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy
- Compile, maintain, file, and present all reports, records, and other documents required; prepare, process, and maintain all documents required to verify safety certification and alcohol and drug testing of bus drivers
- Ensure that employee time records are accurately maintained and data necessary to process transportation payroll is delivered in a timely manner
- Develop and administer budget based on documented needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely
- Maintain current inventory of supplies and parts and initiate purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies; approve and forward invoices for transportation to accounting department
- Recommend disposal of obsolete or worn-out buses and equipment; recommend purchase of vehicles as necessary
- Implement district's student discipline policies and ensure that expectations about appropriate behavior when using district transportation are communicated to students; enforce student discipline and suspension of riding privileges for any student who violates rules and regulations
- Investigate reported concerns and take appropriate action to resolve issues
- Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal; prepare, review, and revise transportation department job descriptions; report to work in a timely manner according to assigned schedule
- Supervise the implementation and upkeep of the electronic bus pass and location tracking system
- Maintain professional interactions with staff, parents, community and visitors
- Demonstrate the ability to remain calm and withstand pressures
- Demonstrate flexibility to change in routine and adapt quickly to changing situations
- Demonstrates respect, courteous to peers and visitors and assist fellow workers willingly
