Description
Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Project Manager to join our rapidly growing Transportation Global Practice (GP) to support highway and municipal roadway projects in our Dallas or Austin, Texas office.
In this position, you will be a key part of a seller/doer team, and you will manage all aspects of transportation projects from business development, scope, and fee development, contracting, staffing plan development, risk identification and management, project oversight, quality management, and financial performance. You will also coordinate closely with our leadership team to help set strategic goals for growing and improving the practice in terms of sales, profitability, and technical excellence.
Responsibilities:
Adhere to Burns & McDonnell’s safety programs, training, and policies, as well as promote the Safety & Health performance of project team members and subcontractors.
Develop new and manage existing client relationships while interfacing with the client for proposal and project-related items.
Identify transportation project opportunities early and participate in go/no-go decisions in cooperation with office leadership and Transportation GP leadership.
Lead pursuit strategy and capture plan development to pre-sell projects before RFP release.
Lead or facilitate proposal development, based on client feedback and key win themes for project pursuits.
May serve as a client account manager for select transportation clients – client account managers will take primary responsibility for ultimate delivery of services and client satisfaction.
Provide leadership and guidance in multiple facets of project management including safety, quality, engineering, costs, construction sequencing, environmental compliance, agency coordination project controls, and public/community relations.
Plan, organize and communicate project personnel needs to management.
Build project teams in coordination with the Design Department Manager and mentor staff on technical aspects of projects.
Serve as a leader in utilizing the latest technologies in engineering and construction standards, methods, and approaches.
Lead project planning, budgeting, and scheduling; and establish critical project objectives.
Analyze, monitor, and communicate project health (financials, schedule, quality, and risks) to all internal and external stakeholders.
Bolster the Burns & McDonnell brand in Transportation through participation and leadership in professional/technical societies and speaking engagements at industry conferences.
Lead or facilitate contract development and negotiation process, including coordination with company Legal and Insurance, after consultant selection.
Support and assist in the development and execution of the Department’s operational structures and procedures.
Support or lead portions of Department meetings and trainings.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Our ideal candidate will be someone with excellent client interaction skills who can manage and lead design teams specializing in roadway reconstruction but also containing structural and/or rail infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will have experience successfully delivering projects for TxDOT and other transportation clients in Texas.
Design/Build experience is a plus.
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum of 7 years related experience (at least 12 years preferred) in the development or management of roadway engineering and/or construction projects.
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas.
Precertification with TxDOT in at least one work category.
Entrepreneurial nature and desire to work with existing and new clients to identify new projects, articulate to the clients our ability to perform those projects, and translate that into the sale of design and/or construction services.
General business and financial calculation knowledge.
Proven ability to lead and develop multi-discipline project teams, including engineers, surveyors, scientists, and public involvement specialists.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and presentation skills.
Ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines while managing multiple projects concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met.
Ability to focus on the big picture to effectively and efficiently provide services that meet client needs, while also having the ability to identify and analyze details that are critical to project outcomes.
Willingness and ability to develop a broad set of service offering types to allow for flexibility to sell work in growing markets.
Willingness to cross-sell other services offered by Burns & McDonnell outside the project manager’s core set of services.
Experience working with transportation clients such as DOTs, cities, counties, private developers, and/or railroads.
Experience in managing business development efforts, which includes proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, budgeting, and client coordination.
Ability to travel 10% of the time, with short periods exceeding 30%.
