Position Summary:

Virginia Commonwealth UniversitySchool of Medicine (SOM) is seeking a collaborative and experiencedprofessional to fill the role of Human Resources Director for ClinicalDepartments. The HR Director will be one of four HR Directors serving theSchool of Medicine. This position willbe responsible for providing oversight for all human resources services to 11clinical departments, and will serve as the liaison between the VCU HealthSystem and the School of Medicine HR team. The position will collaborate withSOM HR on strategic plans and initiatives to support the School ofMedicine. The HR Director reports to the Assistant Dean for Administration andserves as an advisor for employees, managers and school leadership.

Thisposition is eligible for flexible work arrangements including a hybridschedule.

CoreResponsibilities:

Directs all human resources operations for the assigned clinical departments. (65%)

  • Ensures compliance with all applicable HR policies and procedures and serves as an expert resource for HR affairs.
  • Provides consultative guidance and advice on complex HR matters.
  • Serves as a liaison between the SOM and VCU Health System for HR related issues.
  • Serves as subject matter expert on VCUHS benefits and leave.
  • Oversees all staff and faculty recruitment and hiring.
  • Ensures the School’s commitment to diversity is reflected in hiring and human resource practices including actively recruiting a diverse body of employees.
  • Manages employee onboarding, including developing a standard onboarding process for dual employees.
  • Oversees employee compensation
  • Oversees all position changes including salary increases, title change requests, employee role changes, and revisions to position descriptions.
  • Manages employee relations issues and serves as the primary Employee Relations liaison.
  • Provides guidance and counseling to employees and serves as a neutral third-party mediator.
  • Oversees the employee performance evaluation and merit processes.
  • Provides guidance on leave policies, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
  • Facilitates training sessions to support the needs of assigned service areas.
  • Participates in the HR community by attending HR Professional Committee meetings, career community events and VCU HR training for HR Professionals.
  • Participates in special projects as identified in support of the School of Medicine, and VCU’s new Great Place policy and service delivery model.
  • Providesback-up support for the SOM HR team.

Manages the HR Administrators for assigned clinical units. (30%)

  • Expectations are clear, well communicated and relate to the goals and objectives of the School.
  • Staff receive frequent, constructive feedback.
  • Staff have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals.
  • The requirements of the performance management system are met and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation.
  • Performanceissues are addressed and documented as they occur.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%) 

Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience in lieu of educational requirements.
  • Progressive and significant human resources responsibility and leadership.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels of university administration.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, multi-task work environment that may present conflicting deadlines.
  • Ability to develop relationships and build partnerships with internal teams and stakeholders in a diverse organization and across all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions, take initiative, work independently, and exercise professional judgment independently without close supervision.
  • Ability to translate changing business objectives to effective HR strategies.
  • Ability to handle sensitive or confidential information, and interpret and consult University, State, and Federal administrative polices while promoting unit-wide adherence.
  • Excellent analytical, planning, critical thinking, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and HR Information systems.
  • Demonstratedexperience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and studentenvironment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HR experience in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of VCU employee groups, including all subsets of faculty and staff.
  • Experience working with VCU’s HRIS suite including Banner, Image Now, Real Time, Cornerstone, etc.
    Supervisory experience.
  • SHRM Human Resources certification or equivalent (or progress toward)
