Cashier Overview for Valley Metal Recycling
The role of the Cashier is fundamental in the process of receiving and selling scrap metal. The primary task is managing inbound and outbound shipments by scaling trucks accurately. As the beginning and end component of processing scrap metal, the Cashier maintains regular communication with internal and external customers, third-party transportation, as well as key departments like the commercial and production teams.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety, and Environment
· Strict adherence to the Health, Safety, and Environmental standards of Valley Recycling.
· Foster a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
Operational Performance & Best Business Practices
· Warmly welcoming and greeting customers, managing incoming phone calls, and ensuring the correct payments are made to customers.
· Efficient management of inbound and outbound shipments; accurate scaling of trucks in and out. Ensure correct weights are recorded on all shipments and assist drivers with axle weights.
· Documentation of logs and preparation of paperwork for all types of shipments, including inbound, outbound, and yard transfers.
· Regular communication with the processing yard on shipments within the facility, conveying specific needs for certain loads.
· Execution of various other tasks as required to ensure continuous flow of operations both inside and outside the office.
Internal Control Responsibilities
Support the company's internal control process, which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls, as well as proposing modifications to policies, procedures, and controls to better suit the business.
Job Conditions
The Cashier will be occasionally exposed to all weather conditions and physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt common in a scrap yard. Safety shoes, hardhats, and eye protection must be worn as necessary. There is no travel requirement for this role.
Stress levels may increase due to handling multiple safety and maintenance issues. Workloads can be unpredictable, particularly during peak times. Flexibility is essential to meet critical deadlines. Disturbances in work flow and irregularities in work schedule are occasional. Overtime, including weekends, weekdays, and holidays, may be required.
Physical Requirements
The Cashier needs to: sit, stand, and walk for up to 6-8 hours per day; occasionally maneuver around and over piles of scrap metal or equipment; occasionally bend at the knees to improve visibility; frequently reach at arm's length or overhead; twist and turn at the neck and trunk; walk frequently on uneven ground; lift, carry, push and pull over 25 pounds occasionally. Visual acuity for detailed work such as reports, manuals, documents, and computer work is necessary. Hearing acuity for daily communication with customers, drivers, and other employees is crucial. The ability to interact with others, work independently, and pay constant attention to detail is essential.
Qualifications
· Previous experience in Cashier/Customer Service roles is preferred.
· Prior experience with Scale Operation is desired.
· Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
